In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
nidus \NYE-dus\ noun
1 : a nest or breeding place; especially : a place or substance in an animal or plant where bacteria or other organisms lodge and multiply
2 : a place where something originates, develops, or is located
Example sentence:
The college, with its focus on human ecology, is widely known as a nidus of environmental activism.
Etymology:
The sciences use "nidus" to refer to a breeding ground, often a place where bacteria lodge and multiply. Thus, although it literally means "nest" in Latin, the word carries none of the positive connotations that "nest" has in English (such as "home"). Rather, a nidus is usually a source of infection or undesirable opinions or habits. But that hasn't kept other "nidus"-related words in English from referring to homier places, such as the nests where animals rear their young. We have "nidification," for the process of building a nest, and "nidicolous," meaning "reared in a nest."
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

WFB's attempt to emulate us ; ) No pushing at the door please!
we also ate at a Kings while we were up there and the waitress was extremely personable. she said, What'll yunz have? my kids waited til she walked away with our order and said OMG did she just say YUNZ??? they only hear me talking that way for effect and someone used it in everyday convo! my kids think i make this stuff up and that no one really talks that way.
they had them in NY? i thought it was just a PA thing. we don't have them here. big XSfam fave is Hoss'ssss'ssss. my dearly departed dad always loved it, so when we would visit when the kids were small we always went. we had his 85th bday shebang there!
There were ever only two HOss's in NY, both closed down. We first went to one in West Virginia along I81. Our kids loved that place.
Mrs. F & I drove by it on rte. 28 last month -- couldn't believe how different that whole area looks.
Hope it helps revitalize the area, but my own highly nonscientific observation is that everyone's moving to Butler, Washington & Westmoreland counties.
There's a Gatto Cycle Shop in the mall????
Bwa-ha-ha-ha!!!
martin-- wasn't that one the old Junior High overlooked?
I agree.
Yup! AFAIK it's still there in the old YMCA bldg. Plus they have a "Diner" there close by.
But West Tarentum is HOSED. The two times I got hassled there in the late 80s by yunzer punks was right in the vicinity of Gattos.
Nowadays the area is just DESOLATE. Not messy; just EMPTY.
Sad.
xsbro was a huge devotee of Gattos so he was psyched to see it in there.
new ken is even WORSE!
and yeah, i think the Gattos in the mall is just a branch. the main one is still there.
Ugh, that site was depressing.
It is interesting to live in an area that is still growing, and then go back and visit the Heights, which is dying. Literally.
Geeze, I don't know which is worse the women pedophiles or the men. It is beyond my understanding and you know, I don't even think that Freud could have understood it.
Hi there feathery one.
Well done Loney! A for you!
Yes, it is. A for you.
A for you. I'm not complaining. When I can only drop in for a few minutes, it makes it easier to play catch-up. Some folks get huffy if they don't get a grade in a certain period of time. I try.
Last time I was at my Aunt's in Entriken, we went over to Altoona or maybe it was Huntington and ate at Hoss's. They had the most amazing slaw made with broccoli. The food was very good. Hmmmmm, need to call Aunt Margaret. Thanks for reminding me!
Bwaynose deehos.
A for you. Babytalk has always been banned in this house.
