Word For The Day, Thursday, April 27, 2006 - nidus
dictionaries ad nauseum, internet | April 27, 2006 | secret garden

Posted on 04/27/2006 6:11:54 AM PDT by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

nidus • \NYE-dus\ • noun
1 : a nest or breeding place; especially : a place or substance in an animal or plant where bacteria or other organisms lodge and multiply
2 : a place where something originates, develops, or is located

Example sentence:
The college, with its focus on human ecology, is widely known as a nidus of environmental activism.

Etymology:
The sciences use "nidus" to refer to a breeding ground, often a place where bacteria lodge and multiply. Thus, although it literally means "nest" in Latin, the word carries none of the positive connotations that "nest" has in English (such as "home"). Rather, a nidus is usually a source of infection or undesirable opinions or habits. But that hasn't kept other "nidus"-related words in English from referring to homier places, such as the nests where animals rear their young. We have "nidification," for the process of building a nest, and "nidicolous," meaning "reared in a nest."

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

i honestly don't know, dixie. this is not a case of, OH IT ALWAYS WENT ON IT JUST WASN"T PUBLICIZED. is it that kids are growing up with parents who do not set boundaries for them, so they don't know WHERE the boundaries are? Pam Rogers could really not have been raised properly to have turned out like this. Babytalk/cooing to a 13 yr old lover? it makes me want to vomit. i swear she was the one that when the original charges were filed, they had audiotape of her phone conversation with this child and she was talking in that singsongy baby talk voice and actually said "pinkyswear?" to him about some promise he was making to her. PINKYSWEAR.

So the breeding ground of corruption, scandal, greed, envy, lust, socialism, and perversion is right the in the midus of the DNC meeting rooms in Washington?

I thought that the nidus of "pinkyswear" was the First Grade.

p.s. off-topic, I'm in paroxysms of delight that Tony Snow is the new Press Secretary.

that does appear to be her maturity level. though a goodly percentage of male freepers would want to bang her anyway. RME.

so long time no see Explorer girl! i was up home right before Easter and was tipped off by Marteen to a BIG NEW MALL over natrona way. so we visited and dropped some $$ on the impoverished allekiski valley economy. besides no sales tax on clothes in PA and xsboy needed new basketball shoes!

good news about tony, have the freepers started trashing him yet? i guess not bc he hasn't started yet, but you know that's coming. the unappeasables will NOT be appeased by his performance. hopefully tony knows that and won't take it out on the entire site.

the hot pedophile Pam Rogers of TN, who is still pursuing her 13 yo lover and sending him phone pix of her messing with her own self, which has her up on new charges after the last. she has the maturity level of a 7 yo.

I saw when they were building that mall. Was anybody actually there? I think it is by the same developer as Potomac Mills and Arundel Mills. I can't imagine that local economy could support such a behemoth. I read an article in the WSJ that said "The Mills" annual growth was up because of new developments, but that the management of them kind of stunk.

Martin, who are you calling jagoff? My ton-ton?

well it wasn't all that populated compared to HERE. but on Good Friday we attempted, along with my bro and his fam, to have lunch at the Olive Garden up there and were told it was an hour wait. ummmm...no. we went to Hoss'ssss'ss over in Murrysville instead. my kids love that place. Anchor stores are Kaufmans, Penneys and Sears, along with a Dicks and a Linens and things. THREE count them THREE Pittsburgh sports team stores in there. and a Gatto's cycle shop, which is kind of odd. a motorcycle shop in a mall. There is a nice looking bowling alley and a glow in the dark miniature indoor golf deal, both of which would be nice places for kids bday parties, so maybe they have that going for it.
