Boston Radio Watch: Done deal--Red Sox to WBOS
Boston Radio Watch ^ | 04/23/06 | Mark Schnyder/Boston Radio Watch

"Radio bases loaded : Sox to change channels

"Red Sox, Entercom, and Greater Media are all about to end playing hardball any minute now. While Sox and Greater Media managements remains mum, some of their personnel are now openly bragging around town that the Sox broadcasts will move from WEEI AM 850 after 12 years. The shortly-to-be-announced "done deal" has the Sox purchasing a majority interest in WBOS 92.9FM with Greater Media retaining a remaining share of the station. A Sox source tells BRW that the deal may be announced as soon as Monday(4/24)."

Not an official Sox announcement yet, but looking like it. No static, no static, no static at all...(WBOS) FM... (starting next year).

Sox are 1/6th owned by NY Times, parent company of Globe; might we see Boston Globe Radio on WBOS, similar to Washington Post Radio (1500) in DC?

Baseball sounds better on FM IMO.

AM is only good for talk.

"No static, no static at all..." And the folks at the post office where I work (nights; lots of machinery) will be able to pick it up better!

More than a few baseball teams have games on FM, some have their flagship stations on FM. In Boston the flagship of
the Patriots network is on FM (WBCN), so you got football;
prob some basketball/hockey on FM, too.

The AM dial is sh*t.

Do you know what is crazy ?

I have to listen to the Cincy Reds on 700 WLW out of Cincinnati at night. Why ? I have a couple of local stations near by that carry their games. Those local stations power down to some pathetic amount of watts at night. There is a station. I can look out into the skyline from the top of a hill and see the tower lights, but you can not pick up that station. sad.

Sad.

I listen to it in the morning when I can't get Bill Bennett on 1150. BOS usually has a minimum of BS, just decent music. The interesting part of this will be to see if any of the other station format is changed.

There's always XM or Sirius....

I remember WBOS as being a very liberal/new age sort of station. (Earth Day promotions, etc) I know that stations change their formatting so things might be different than before.

Some speculation has it that Greater Media would move some or all of its WTKK 96.9 FM Talk lineup to WBOS, since a talk/
sports talk station would make more sense for a Sox flagship
then "AAA" (adult album alternative). Who knows, they could
move the WBOS music to 96.9 in that case.

WTKK currently has: Imus, Mike Barnicle, Eagan & Braude
(hour long show), O'Reilly, Michael Graham, Severin,
Ingraham (soon to be popping up also at WCRN AM 830 in
Worcester, 1-3 pm), and John and Jeff. Maybe some/all of those shows could move to 96.9 (longtime Boston sports talk host Eddie Andelman works for WTKK, too; he could be part of the mix.

The plot thickens.

>>shows could move to 96.9

D'oh! I meant move to 92.9!!! Sorry.

Oh, and if Severin winds up on 92.9 with the Sox, he'd be pre-empted a lot (provided Greater Media renews the deal
with him). Severin is apparently getting pre-empted a lot
in Philly on WPHT (as far as I know, still the flagship
of the Phillies)

WHIZ 1240 Zanesville, Ohio.

their signal dies at night outside of that immediate area.

HIZ doesn't really drop power, but the ingress from other stations on that frequency is pretty bad at night. Got the same problem with the Columbus affiliate. I usually do the Reds on WLW also.

WATH Athens is that way for sure. They go down to 26 watts at night.

I was not sure about 1240. I thought they were doing something different when they changed tower locations. When their tower was Southeast of Zanesville, their signal was better north. Now that their tower is ne of Zanesville, their signal is better further south. Does not make much sense. I can barely hear them at night here still.

I don't think this has anything to do with the reception of AM vs. FM. This smacks of Larry Lucchino trying to control his team's radio outlet. He (and the team) are regularly ripped on WEEI and it is no secret that Larry doesn't like it. Lucchino is also no fan of the conservative bent of 'EEI. These are the only reasons that this deal makes sense. WEEI, for all its faults, pulls down huge ratings as Sports talk station. It has a decent signal and a large network. Moving the Sox smacks of the petulance that Lucchino has become known for. My prediction is that this will last for a single contract cycle and be back on 'EEI in a couple of years.

Yes, Sox/Lucchino would love to be able to control content. They wouldn't be able to control what WEEI says but in running their own station they could put on sports talk shows that
don't slam the team too much if at all!

WEEI does have good ratings and a fairly good signal THOUGH
they can't push too far west due to FCC restrictions (other stations on frequency); same with WRKO. This of course is why they're beefing up WEEI's reach by putting it in Worcester
(1440), R.I. (103.7) and soon I believe it'll be in Springfield area on 105.5.

You're right, this may not work out ultimately.

Radio fans like myself are wondering what will happen
(and again, no official announcement from Sox or Greater Media but it seems to be true)...moving talk from sister
station 96.9 to 92.9 and adding some sports talk hosts,
maybe?

And Lucchino and the rest of the Sox brain trust seem to be on the Left for sure (here's where I dig out the pic of
them w/ John Kerry, as seen on bostondirtdogs.com)...so
is it gonna be Air America & Sox 92.9? :)
Even if they don't agree with it conservative talk makes
money.

We'll see if the Sox can run radio the way they run a ballclub... :)

Let's not forget the fact that Greater Media's next door neighbor is the Boston Globe. In addition, they also provide employment for several Globe and ex-Globe staffers (the odious pairing of Barnacle and Shaughnessy to name just two). Globe writers were banned from WEEI a number of years ago by the Sports editor because of "content" issues. The fact was that the radio station was playing drop-ins and booking co-hosts that offended the PC crowd at the Globe. The Globe writers went to a competing sports station that proceeded to get buried in a little less than 3 years. This deal with Greater Media seems to serve the dual purposes of Lucchino's control and some measure of revenge by the Globe. I may be reading too much into this, but it really doesn't pass the smell test.

I spent some time at the Delaware, Oh station and we dropped from 500 watts day (what a flame thrower?????) to 29 watts at night. But it was better than the alternative. At one time, the station could only broadcast during the day.

I've read where HIZ-FM is moving to Baltimore,OH as a Columbus move in. Don't know the timetable.

Yep, they put in an application. It will be strange to be in this area without a WHIZ FM.
