They don't make it, they refine it.
It is a natural resource. One that speculators trade in the futures of. Speculators go crazy for all sorts of reasons. When the price of a barrel goes up, so will the price at the pump.

I'm well aware of how crude is cracked to make gasoline and it's derivatives. But for the gas companies to be complaing that the price of gas is driving up gas prices sounds ludicrous.
