We saw it on stage years ago. I agree that the music is beautiful, but we weren't that thrilled with the show/story. The movie didn't change that.
There are a couple of really cool things in the stage show.
1) when the chandelier falls and
2) when he's taking her below and they're in the boat. It's really cool to see the fog and the boat coming toward you. It looks as though they're really in the water.
As a side note, we saw the DC premier of "Shogun" which I don't think actually ever opened in New York. It was most bad.
But they did this really cool thing with riders on horses. The actors had the fake horse/rider costumes you know where the riders legs are actually the horse legs. It was a really cool scene when the curtain came up and you saw these horsemen riding through the fog.
Then they turned to the side and spoiled the whole illusion. The audience laughed.
That show was painful to watch.

The one show I'd really love to see is The Lion King. It just looks spectacular!
