No, no, plug the monitor into your portable. The portable should sense a working monitor and try to send it a signal. In this configuration, the only suspect device is your monitor.

Good morning Rose!
I just plugged in the monitor to the laptop and hit fn+f7, but all the monitor is still only showing a small strip of screen on the far left side.
My sister hasn't called me back yet, but I'm pretty sure she has a spare monitor somewhere. *fingers crossed*

Say... you're right. If the monitor is messed up, it'll still be messed up when plugged into laptop. Didn't think of that.
