The Hobbit Hole XXIX - Until the stars are all alight...
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 04/20/2006 2:10:46 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Until the stars are all alight

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I've been wanting a hawk and maybe a few owls...

Coyotes would keep me up all night!

They've always been here, and always been in the back forty.

The first year after I moved here the pasture literally ~moved~ with rabbits. They were everywhere. I began noticing bunny parts here or there. I'm sure the coyotes were often close by, when it snowed there were always tracks close by. The number of rabbits decreased, and that's a good thing. Rabbit holes and horses aren't a good mix. Now there are a lot more squirrels by the house, I've probably tripled the number of squirrels. The yapping quite close by is relatively new... Not quite sure what that's about but I wonder if it's not the frustration of chasing squirrels who run up trees. If they didn't make noise, we'd never know they were there.

Huh. Go figure.

The coyotes don't have any natural predators in the vicinity to keep ~them~ in check though? That would be my worry.

Just man... Man's the only predator. Even cougar probably dont' particularly prey on coyotes unless one annoys them. Coyote numbers fluctuate with the food supply. More rabbits, more coyotes, eat all the rabbits, coyotes decrease. Rabbits increase again....

We were up n the night yellin' at a couple coyotes that were yipping and yammering right outside our back fence. Our dogs were snoring and quite useless.

Dang, were they loud or what? Cisco wasn't happy about 'em, but didn't actually bother to pace or anything. Some guard dogs we've got...

I think we jinxed things by discussing how they'd moved on. ;-)

[[Ruthy]]

I'm really sorry, Ruthy. I'm glad you were able to be there for him, but I realize that's just a small comfort in the midst of a lot of pain.

There was a rabbit in my yard yesterday afternoon - first time I'd seen one over here.

Did you hear me yell at 'em? They were right at the fence in the back. Turned the spotlight on them, and they scattered so fast into the brush back there we didn't even see them. Do you have a good strong flashlight?

Don't have a big flashlight, no...just smaller ones.

They were making different noises than before...wonder what that meant.

Thanks, Rosie. I thought I was "prepared" to do what had to be done for Scruffy, but I learned once again that you never really are "prepared" for something like this.

But I'm glad I was there for him too. And I'm especially glad he won't have to suffer through another hurricane season.

The soggy weather always made his arthritis unbearable.

I've been listening to these... none of them sound exactly like the barking last night.

Oh, Ruthy, I'm so sorry to hear about Scruffy.

But he is waiting for you, hale and hearty, and you will be with him again.

THREE-DAY NOVEL CONTEST

Takes Place: September 2 - 4, 2006
Registration postmark deadline: September 1, 2006

Can you produce an entire novel in a mere 72 hours? Join hundreds of writers this Labour Day Weekend and find out for yourself!

Grand Prize: Publication!

Second Prize: $500

And neat literary prizes for 3rd place and the entire short list!

How does it work? Here's the short story: read the rules, register for the contest by September 1st, make a few outline notes (if you wish) and then write an entire novel over the Labour Day Weekend.

Keep energized, stay hydrated, keep your goal in sight and let the momentum of the contest charge your creativity and break through your blocks. Print up your masterwork, stick it in an envelope and mail to us for judging.

We'll announce the best novels in January, hand out some prizes and publish the winner!

If the 3-Day Novel Contest isn’t enough pressure for you, how about doing it live on TV? This year, a dozen entrants will be selected to write their novels live at a Chapters- Indigo store in Edmonton. The chosen few will struggle with the rigours of the contest, plus cameras, crowds, questions, therapists, spelling bees, roving poets, and a national audience. Think you can endure it, and still produce a literary masterwork? They’re accepting applications now (note: you must register for the contest separately).
