The Hobbit Hole XXIX - Until the stars are all alight...

Posted on 04/20/2006 2:10:46 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Until the stars are all alight

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Yeah...that is comforting. THere aren't any back home, and I'm really frightened of the idea of having poisonous ones around.

I probably would have hiked more in CO except for that.

Well, if you want me to haul dirt in there for raised beds, I would, or you can just plant some herbs in pots on the patio and call it good :~D

Maybe you could dig some small holes along the fenceline and stick the corn seeds in there :~D A summer hedge :~D

We had a terrific ride... not very long, but they were tired by the way back. Just the right length for the first time out.

I just wonder how much the total cost would be for one raised bed. If I scaled down my original rather optimistic ideas and just did lettuse and cukes and corn and pumpkins, and only a few of each...I could probably just do one bed, maybe five by ten or four by eight, I'd think.

If the materials wouldn't be too spendy, I could just put soil in there when I buy fill dirt, and mix in some compost and verwhatchamacallit and go to town.

Considering I have the fence and all now...I guess I'm likely to be here at least one more growing season. Could be worth doing.

I'm just discouraged that it doesn't appear as though hard work alone will get me my garden.

I'm glad the weather held out, for the most part! Not a bad day to be out.

Heh...I wonder if the pony would have been better or worse if I went over and talked to her. Probably worse. Brat.

Well it would with more work, but by the time you took all the rocks out, you'd be in a hole :~D

On the plus side here...I have pots for by the gate, I got a nice house plant for work, and I have a shovel and a pitch fork - I was finally able to turn my compost a bit.

Upon which Cisco went after the eggshells that were in there and spread stuff over the whole back yard.

Yeah...it was with that realization that I stopped.

There's just not much topsoil back there. I have no idea why. I couldn't have really known until the grass was gone, so it's not my fault that I've made plans for nothing.

And a dirty old egg-sucking dog. Or would be if he had a chance.

I was going to ask if I could borrow the drill later so I could get those geraniums up and feel like I'd actually accomplished *something* today, but I can't find the brackets anywhere. Nothing is working today. I tried to call home, but this phone doesn't get nearly as good a signal as my old one, so I finally gave up on talking. I could hear them, but they couldn't hear me.

I'm feeling really down in the dumps and useless.

Cheer up, it's Saturday.... enjoy your weekends, doll, this is your free time :~D

Yes, you can borrow the drill, come over any time!

Yeah, but weekends are also supposed to be my time for getting stuff done around here...and I'm just not. And I dont' feel like doing anything beyond sitting around watching TV and goofing around on guitar.

*sigh*

Guess every day can't be a good day. I've had more than my fair share lately.

If I find the brackets and some screws that'll fit them, I'll be over to borrow the drill in a bit. Can bring back your shovel while I'm at it, now I've got my own.

Weekends are do do what you want... seriously... stop it! Do whatever you want! Even if it's watching TV and goofing around on the guitar.

Hedonist... ;-)

But I guess I can always mow tomorrow. Or on Monday when I've been stuck inside all day and will enjoy it more.

Been straightening in here and I *still* can't find those durn brackets. If I don't find them by the end of the day, I'm thinking maybe I'll just pick up another pair. If I find the originals, I can put 'em on the posts just outside the house - it'd be nice to have some there, too.

And I can check out board costs when I go to do that. For a raised bed, I mean. I have a few boards laying around here, but they're all odd lengths and mostly pretty rotten. I guess I could do cinderblocks, too...but that might be pricier.

Yes, and a strong believer in Justice as well. :~D You should have a good time on weekends because that's what you're working all week ~for~.
