in Durham, North Carolina yesterday, a young man was released on $50,000 bail after being charged with Capitol Murder! The Dukies were released on $400,000 bail each on a rape charge. Wow

If the law in NC is the same in most other states, the amount of bail relates to the likelihood of the accused failing to appear. Naturally the seriousness of the crime (severity of punishment) is a factor in that, but so are such matters as place of permanent residence, ties to the community, etc. College students who only temporarily reside in NC while attending school quite arguably present a much more significant risk of non-appearance than does a local permanent resident who has lived in the state his entire life. That and the fact that $50,000 might not mean very much to an affluent Wall Streeter (as one of the boy's fathers has been described) undoubtedly played a role in the disparity you cite.
