Expectant mom dies in collision
A 27-year-old expectant mother died in a head-on collision Sunday on U.S. 31 in Shelby County, authorities said.
Sarah Porter, 27, of Jemison died in the 11:20 a.m. accident, said Sgt. Tim Sartain, Alabama State Troopers spokesman. She was six months pregnant, said Doug Ballard Jr., Shelby County coroner.
Her husband, 29-year-old Heath Porter, remained in critical condition at UAB Hospital Sunday night, said Bob Shepherd, hospital spokesman.
Marco Guarviola, 26, address unknown, a passenger in the 2003 Chevrolet pickup truck that collided with the Porters' 2002 Volkswagen, was also taken to UAB Hospital, where he was listed as critical Sunday night, Shepherd said.
Manuel Valdez, 22, address unknown, who was also in the truck, was taken to Princeton Baptist Medical Center. Efforts to reach a hospital spokesman Sunday night were unsuccessful.
The accident, which occurred in the Saginaw community just south of Alabaster, is under investigation, Sartain said. He declined to provide details.
Several serious accidents have occurred at the site, Sartain said.
"I don't understand why so many accidents have occurred at this particular location," Sartain said. "Traffic is moderately heavy, but the street is a straight, two-lane stretch."
Accident fatalities are always sad, Sartain said.
"But this happening on Easter Sunday is such a tragedy," he said.

Really? Have you checked their visas expiration date? I don't believe you know for sure.
When 3 school buses drop off kids after school at that complex, many more kids than the standard tenant rate should allow, something is amuck!
No one can find out who owns the complex. Therein lies the problem. Not the people who come here and live there, but WHO is encouraging and accomodating the lawbreaking.
Why do I feel this way? I am a granddaughter of 2 LEGAL immigrants and the greatgranddaughter of 8 LEGAL immigrants.
Interesting. I thought the whole idea behind FR was so we could ignore the "media" and get to the truth. Why are you afraid of something that those who are here, shun?
Snakes? On a Plane?
By the way, that apartment complex has a flagpole. On it flies the Mexican flag. Tell me why I shouldn't be angry.
I know their employer, and the strict standards that are used when screening applicants. MANY of them have become Americans.
Now, you may say, how can a person be labled a Cuban, if they live in America as a citizen?
It is no different than when my grandparents immigrated. They would say they were Canadian, but had become naturalized citizens and are now Americans.
>>>Do you know the difference between the victims of the car wreck? The husband who is in critical condition will be required to pay his hospital bill.
And you know this how?????>>>
IF this individual was an illegal alien, there is no way to pursue a lawsuit to secure funds for hospital bill, there has to be a way to collect. If there is no 'employement' (meaning he is being paid under the table) there is no wages to garnish. The law abiding citizen however will most likely be held to the collection process.
Now you can pinpoint how I COULD be incorrect, statistically though, I am not.
Who cares about your personal anecdotes on this thread?
Everyone seems to conveniently forget that this whole thing started because Full Court could not (and still has not) provided a source for adding the words "Mexican immigrant" to the headline.
I'm not saying that there isn't an illegal immigration problem.
It seems to me that everyone thinks it is perfectly acceptable to assume the other driver in this story is an illegal Mexican immigrant just because the article shows a hispanic last name.
And that's just plain stupid.
THAT'S THE EVERLUVIN' POINT fercryinoutloud... We DON'T KNOW that the driver had no license. You have been asked repeatedly to back up your assertions, and you have ignored those requests.
YOU made this about race by changing the title. You over-hyped it by adding "Easter Sunday" to the title.
You don't even KNOW they were MEXICAN. They could be Guatemalan, Cuban, Puerto Rican, or heck Californian.
THEN you tried to back track and say you were just concerned about the woman and her child.
A driver who has no license, probably can't read the traffic signs can't cause accidents?
Well, of course they can. But so can a driver who HAS a license and CAN read the signs. White-Anglo-Saxon-Protestants even.
By your logic the fact that the 9/11 hijackers had driver's licenses and were able to read the flight manual makes everything okay.
I am not assuming such. If I may explain something being from Birmingham. The News ALWAYS states where someone resides among the many municipalities, suburbs and communities that make up our metro area. The information in a case like this, would be provided by law enforcement. Based on the fact that the story says "ADDRESS UNKNOWN" and that the person of unknown address was sent to UAB Hospital would tell me that any such reported person had no identification or insurance. In addition to this accident happening in an area going through rapid construction growth, along with a tremendous increase of illegal immigrants....it smells.
I don't know why everybody is so upset. Obviously, with a name like "Porter" we know it's just one less crack baby in the world.
Now you say "IF".....that's all I was asking for. And now I agree with your statement.
Yes you are.
Ha! Let's see how much folks like you jumping to that conclusion based on a last name. ;-)
Easter Sunday I spent quite a bit of time at a construction sight. Does that mean I'm illegally residing in the states, AND a construction worker?
Ramius only read your posting history because you said My posting history is readily available.
Oh honey, some day I'll buy you a cup of coffee and tell you about the religion forum.
I know where the bodies are buried.
*nods*
I've already decided that Full Court is certifiably insane.
Evidence shmevidence.
All that matters is that the other driver has a Hispanic last name and that his address was "unknown" at the time of the accident.
That is enough to be able to label him an illegal Mexican immigrant.
Didn't you get the memo?
< /sarc >
No one is saying you shouldn't be angry. No one is saying that illegal immigration isn't a problem.
What we ARE saying is that this woman and her child did not die BECAUSE the other driver was an illegal Mexican immigrant.
This thread would have ended yesterday if the poster had simply provided the facts for changing the title.
So far, those facts have alluded this thread. We have, however, a whole lot of ASSumptions...
