Expectant mom dies in collision
A 27-year-old expectant mother died in a head-on collision Sunday on U.S. 31 in Shelby County, authorities said.
Sarah Porter, 27, of Jemison died in the 11:20 a.m. accident, said Sgt. Tim Sartain, Alabama State Troopers spokesman. She was six months pregnant, said Doug Ballard Jr., Shelby County coroner.
Her husband, 29-year-old Heath Porter, remained in critical condition at UAB Hospital Sunday night, said Bob Shepherd, hospital spokesman.
Marco Guarviola, 26, address unknown, a passenger in the 2003 Chevrolet pickup truck that collided with the Porters' 2002 Volkswagen, was also taken to UAB Hospital, where he was listed as critical Sunday night, Shepherd said.
Manuel Valdez, 22, address unknown, who was also in the truck, was taken to Princeton Baptist Medical Center. Efforts to reach a hospital spokesman Sunday night were unsuccessful.
The accident, which occurred in the Saginaw community just south of Alabaster, is under investigation, Sartain said. He declined to provide details.
Several serious accidents have occurred at the site, Sartain said.
"I don't understand why so many accidents have occurred at this particular location," Sartain said. "Traffic is moderately heavy, but the street is a straight, two-lane stretch."
Accident fatalities are always sad, Sartain said.
"But this happening on Easter Sunday is such a tragedy," he said.

Ouch... that's gonna leave a mark...
It's not about the race, it's about an illegal alien without a drivers license causing the death of a young mother and her baby.
Really? So if the borders were secured, and Sarah and baby were alive today that would be a mistake?
I'm still waiting for you to show us these "FACTS" of which you speak.
But you altered the title to say "Mexican immigrants."
There are no illegal immigrants from other countries or who aren't hispanic?
Ummm, that's not what you said earlier...
Zing!!
The Birmingham News has a long history of leaving out details of such events. They would not even report a TB breakout at a school because it was traced to illegals.
I'm as against illegal immigration as the next FReeper, but this story neither indicates there were illegals OR immigrants involved. Believe it or not, there are people like my family who were here at the time the Republic was born who have surnames like that.
Like I said, if you find that I am guilty of THAT, then throw stones, until then, back off.
If you really believe that securing the borders prevents automobile accidents, then you need to seek professional help.
Diagnosing you is way above my pay grade.
My son and I were almost killed in an automobile accident that was my fault.
I've barely even been to Mexico.
What function does the license serve in an accident again...? does it provide some additional cushion or make the seatbelts stronger or something? Maybe if the driver carries it is his teeth he pays better attention to the road? Maybe it lessens the affect of alcohol on the brain?
Actually, I don't recall from the story that there was any indication yet of which vehicle was at fault? Does that matter to you?
At least the other driver would of had insurance that would help at this time.
"Without a driver's license" seems to be more "new" information. It's not in the article, and it's not on the WTVM Channel 9 news site either - nor is their immigrant status.
You hijacked the thread when you posted it, Full Court.
This story has nothing to do with illegals and/or Mexicans.
YOU were the one that added that to the article YOU posted.
*chucks another rock*
That's just sad.
How so?
You are simply making too many generalizations here.
There are thousands of people out there driving without licenses and insurance. Many of whom are legal citizens.
You're not thinking this through.
It would of prevented this one.
