Hello, FRiends.
My neighbor's daughter, a junior in high school, told me she is required to write a 1000 word essay on "why America sucks". Her teacher quotes from Zinn, and pretends to be "open-minded".
I recommended she read Swifts, "A Modest Proposal", which she had never heard of, as a guide for crafting a satirical answer to an asinine assignment.
ANY help/insight/wisdom in this matter will be greatly appreciated.

When I was in high school, we were assigned to write a paper on "a war of American imperialism." So I gave the teacher 5 pages on the War Between the States. Not what he wanted. Boy, were they mad.
My advice is the same as yours -- be satirical. America sucks, all right. Who needs all this freedom anyway? Why, that free speech thing is very disruptive to the smooth functioning of government, for starters.
Well, it might be pointed out to the teacher that in many other countries if he were to assign such an essay about why that country "sucks" he would be summarily executed for it.
I suppose it depends on POV, but in this teacher's case, one reason America sucks is because we don't execute teachers who are morons.
Maybe a follow-up with a petulant flounce over the uncertainty of freedom and a candid assessment of humans as zoo animals better off kept in small cages by a benevolent government that would take care of education, health care, job search, housing, and retirement for them.
She could finish it up with a longing for a Matrix-like world in which Neo et all were the bad guys, tearing people from a happy, spoon-fed cocoon-like existence.
Because our country has tenure.

Your neighbor daughter should open the essay with: "Because our high school teachers give us assignment like this. We are taught to hate ourselves. As a result, we--the young generation--do not have confidence on ourselves whatsoever!"

I would not write that tripe.
I would think this is inappropriate and the teacher should be fired.
None of the teachers or professors that teach/speak out against America get fired. With each one that doesn't, it emboldens more.

Because America lets old hippies and people brainwashed by their hippie instructors back there in the '60s and '70s continue to teach school even though most of them couldn't pass a marijuana screen if their life depended on it. Let alone a legitimate competency test in the subject they teach.
That's why America sucks. No guts to clean house.
