It boggles my mind how two guys who grew up so close together could wind up so far apart. I didn't even try to change his mind about anything - that train has left the station.
Well, actually I did tell him that I was certain that Al Quaida was behind 9/11 and that we had identified all the hijackers but it had no effect. This experience left me feeling quite pessimistic. I just don't understand how this set of beliefs are possible.

Idiot. Fortunately, my experience with Muslims in this country gives me hope.

Was this guy white or black or what?
He should have a year long tour of Islamic lands. Maybe reality would sink in.
Mass paranoia, conspiracy nuts. Even just one gives me the willies.

I wouldn't be too pessimistic, if I were you. How many uneducated Muslims who are being used by their faith actually know reality when it stares them in the face? They don't question what the imams say, or what they learn at the massadras in general. There are those, who DO seek out reality. But, when education is lacking, it is very hard to reach the surface.
Remember, 50 million people have been liberated in Iraq! That more than makes up for the ignorance of the plumber you met, today. (Did he acknowledge that the Iraqis' freedom was a positive thing?)

I guess you are gonna think I'm naive but I've always had a hard time believing that a cult could start with a perfectly normal person and get them to believe totally unbelievable things. When I was younger I used to wonder about picking a cult to join to prove I couldn't be brainwashed.
Of course, I'd also like to try to resist waterboarding so I may not be normal. I've read that most agents who experience it for training can't last 30 seconds even though intellectually they know there is no danger.

He was black. And that is a good point about overseas travel. It didn't come up. Frankly I spent most of the time just listening stunned and trying to remember just what he said in case he said something to indicate a threat.

The last time I had a lot of contact, in college during the 80's, Muslims didn't seem very different from any other student except for less drinking. Hopefully this guy (and his mosque if he is telling the truth) are atypical.

Call me crazy but I expect a lot better from a Georgia man raised Baptist.

Sounds like a closed minded liberal. No discussion of current events are possible. Ever!

I appreciate the positive tone of your post. He said American got a pass on Iraq because Saddam "wasn't nice" but there would be no pass on Iran. But you are right I don't want to over generalize - I'm hoping this is not typical.

Area51 is right about Islam being a cult and right about how cults brainwash.
I've had some very close dealings with a cult that started as an Islamic sect. The parallels are exact - Islam is a caricature of a cult except that it's lasted so long.
And the followers are clearly brainwashed.
That said, this is a perfect example of why I replace my own toilets.
