Hollywood actor Tom Cruise is planning to eat his new baby's placenta, it emerged today.
It is the latest in a series of unusual revelations by the 43-year-old Mission Impossible star about the child he is expecting with fiancee Katie Holmes.
He told GQ magazine: "I'm gonna eat the placenta. I thought that would be good. Very nutritious. I'm gonna eat the cord and the placenta right there."
Cruise has also claimed he knew actress Holmes, 27, was pregnant, even before she told him.
A follower of Scientology, he has defended the religion's belief that women should give birth in silence.
"It's really about respecting the woman. It's not about her not screaming," he has told GQ.
Cruise, who also believes he can cure drug addicts, plans to marry Holmes in the summer. He said earlier this month that their baby was due "any day now".

I wonder if he'll eat it raw like a big bloody oyster or saute it with olive oil and onions? He could have his chef prepare placenta pot pie or make placenta pudding for desert. If he wants to keep it simple he can make a peanut butter and placenta sandwich or pulled placenta and cheese sandwich by himself.

It's true - doesn't mean it's right.

I'll be say eeeewwwww right up front, but eating the placenta is getting more common, even in your UK. I think it's part of the new age "bonding" and "back to nature" things. The placenta is extremely healthy, and helps to replenish a lot of what the mother lost during birth (especially iron), which is why carnivorous animals usually eat the placenta after birth.
Of course, having a healthy meal with liver afterwards would probably accomplish the same goal.

You nailed it. I think to them this is like the coming of their saviour.
I have no doubts that the name will be weird.

This has to be some kind of joke. This dude has serious problems.

When I speak to the man that has experienced childbirth personally, then I will listen to him tell me that I have to be silent during birth. Until then, no man will tell me how to behave when I am having a baby. What a crock! Exactly right. I heard that Katie wouldn't be 'allowed' to make any noise during birth. Ha. She hasn't gone through childbirth yet. Hopefully she'll take his lower lip and pull it up over his head to show him what kind of pain she is experiencing.

I might be off-base here but I was under the impression that the modern day, hairy armpit, earth mother, have the baby at home with a mid-wife, drive beat up old volvo with bumperstickers crowd plastered all over it crowd does this (eats placenta) as a matter of course?
Also FWIW mother dogs do this I think.
The above two comments may not be totally unrelated.

It's easy to envision Tom Cruise in his old age, broke, broken, babbling to himself, homeless, haggard and raking through the garbage cans behind abortatoriums in search of food.
