Heard there was a wild digging spree at the time of the Dead Sea Scrolls discovery to find the treasure of the Essenes, which was supposed to be substantial and include the gold and objects [including the Ark of the Covenant] from the Temple saved from the Roman destruction of Jerusalem.

King's Treasures were apparently big during the time of the Persian Kings, gold goblets full of rubies, etc.
