Is The Duke Rape Story Unraveling?
Yahoo ^ | 04/12/06 | Tom Bevan

There's probably no better way to get a feel for what's been happening in the Duke University lacrosse team rape story than to read a series of revised news alerts on the case issued by the Durham Police's Crimestoppers unit. An initial release sent out April 3 which offered cash rewards for tips about the case read: "The victim was sodomized, raped, assaulted and robbed. This horrific crime sent shock waves throughout our community."

Yesterday at 11:16am, according to the Raleigh News & Observer, Crimestoppers issued a revised version of the same news release which dropped the entire second sentence about a "horrific crime" and also added a qualifier to the first: "The victim alleges that she was sodomized, raped, assaulted and robbed." [emphasis added]

A mere eighteen minutes later a third revision was issued, changing the word "victim" to "complainant."

The evolving facts in the case seem to not only warrant those revisions but also to suggest that the case may be in the process of unraveling.

"I don't trust defense attorneys any more than I trust most prosecutors"

I actually know a good defense attorney for the county....great conservative and a NRA'er if you can imagine......

this story is perplexing and I don't know what's truth and whats not.....

what does the DA have or know that he feels he can take this case to trial.....there just doesn't seem to be much....

correct me if I am wrong......but she showed up with her fellow stripper.....I understand she didn't stay that long....ran out on the "boys" after only a few minutes of dancing....and took the $800......I understand that she didn't tell anybody anything until sometime later, and she didn't go to the hospital until at least 31 hours later....

how can anything that was found on her body such as scratches or bruises be attributed to the team when so much time had elapsed?

of course, if the DA does have solid evidence, I'll be perfectily happy if whoever hurt her does a few years behind bars....

the one ace in the hole for Nifong is that whatever jury he gets will be heavily black....

"Do you know that 50% of women who make accusations of rape are lying"

and do you know that upwards of 90% of women don't file rape charges at all due to fear or ridicule and character assasination.....

I'm waiting for one of them to just admit they don't believe in evidence or trials.

I'm waiting for Nifong to show up at some conference in black face.

The DA's looking for a ham sandwich on white bread with mayonnaise for a grand jury to indite.

Right now I don't see how they could convict one guy if the girl said 3 did it.

The percentage of women who do not report rapes to police is high, over 50%, it's not upwards of 90%.

Reporting to police
Most rapes and sexual assaults were
not reported to the police (table 3).
Sixty-three percent of completed rapes,
65% of attempted rapes, and 74% of
completed and attempted sexual
assaults against females were not
reported to the police. (See box, page
3, for the most common reasons for
not reporting.) When the police were
notified about a rape or sexual assault,
the victim most often made the report.

See page two of the following Justice Department report.

With scam artists like this stripper and Kate Faber, the number will go higher.

There is nothing more despicable on the face of the earth than a woman who would falsely accuse a man of rape.

The 90% number is refuted in another post claiming it's closer to 50%. Regardless, if half the accusations weren't lies, there might be less ridicule and character assassination. The liars make life harder for the true victims.

I agree fully. In fact, I would like to see rape shield laws cover the accused. No names released, closed depositions, grand juries and trial. If guilt is found then release the rapists name.

My degrees and experience is in Criminal Justice and I'm currently back in school to become a Forensic Nurse. Having this experience I've come in contact and dealt with many women who have been raped. It's not something a woman ever gets over or fully heals from. In fact, a violent rape is almost like a death.

A feeling of safety is gone from their lives. Trusting people, especially men is very difficult. Many women experience horrible nightmares for months and years after wards. A good portion of women after being raped lose the ability to receive pleasure from sex, even in loving/safe/committed relationships. The physical scars heal quickly, mental healing takes years and rarely is that healing ever 100%.

Because of what I've experienced I am incensed when any woman makes an unfounded claim of rape. Women who makes these claims should be forced to go to hospitals and see a woman who comes in after a violent rape. Should be made to go to the morgue and see a woman's body who's been raped and murdered. Then maybe they will understand that rape isn't a joke.
