Lawson rises, Kiwanuka falls in latest projections

By Mel Kiper Jr.

Special to ESPN Insider

With the NFL draft two weeks away, the one hot spot in the first round remains with the New Orleans Saints and second overall pick. While I still have North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams going to New Orleans, the outlook of the first round could change significantly if the Saints trade the pick.

My first-round projections remain nearly the same, with the one newcomer being NC State defensive end Manny Lawson. Overshadowed by Williams at NC State, Lawson had a very good senior season then performed exceptionally well at the NFL scouting combine. Right now I am projecting the Jets will use their second first-round pick on Lawson, where he will be used as a pass-rushing defensive end/outside linebacker.

New this week are my projections for the second, third and fourth rounds. You will be surprised to see some players initially projected as first-round picks have slipped to the second round in recent weeks.

I just don't see the Steelers going for Moss, or rather I hope they don't. They already have a stable of smallish receivers and need a deep threat to spread the "d".

I'd rather they got a big bruiser running back to compliment Parker. Hopefully White will fall because of his poor workout at the combines.

The whole draft is going to turn on what the Saints do with their pick. It's going to be fun to watch.

I think it's a possition that needs to be addressed, but I think 14 is a little high for him.  I think there'll be some good value in OL when we come around in round two.  Plus, the kid from Boise State, Colledge, is the EXACT type of player the Eagles pick.  So, I also think Justice is an unlikely pick.

If it were me, I like the Santonio Holmes kid from Ohio State, but again, I don't think that he's a guy likely to end up here.

At 14, I think there's going to be some interesting players on the board, I'd be happy with best availible player.  If it shakes out that all those players are CBs, which we really don't need, I'd like to see them deal down and grab a Center like Nick Mangold or Greg  Elsinger.

What do you see the Pats doing?  They're one team I never know what they're going to do, but you can pretty well rest assured it's a smart move Bellichek and company come up with.

I've seen him going there in some mocks. Some Steeler fans I've chatted with don't want him.

I guess Bunkley is a rising star?

In my opinion, his stock is rising way too high.  He's a nice player, don't get me wrong, but he's a late first, early second guy in my book.  But you're right, I'm starting to see him crack the top ten.

Their philosophy has been to take the best player still available on their board regardless of position. Who that'll be when they're picking at #21 (if they stay there that is) is anyone's guess.

There always seems to be these fast risers as we get closer to draft day.

I like the classic immovable object. Sam Adams or Tony Siragusa worked well for the Ravens in the past.

I like the way that the Patriots, Eagles, and Ravens always draft; take the best available. Todd Heap, Ed Reed, and Ray Lewis were all best available draft picks, not necessarily needs at the time.

I hate those rising stars after the season. Workout warriors. AKA Kyle Boller. Ozzie Newsomes two first round failures, Travis Taylor and Kyle Boller.

If you're talkin' about White I think that's because word on him is that he's a friend of thugs and has work ethic problems. In my view he's a young guy that can learn.

Attitude is evrything though so I might be a bit naive.

I do as well. A lot of good players can slip in the first round because some GM's get locked into drafting a certain position.

The Steelers would check into that kind of information before drafting him.

It's crazy. Never did that well on a football field but because they can lift a lot of weights they're suddenly high draft material?

Do the Jest really think that Patrick Ramsey is their answer at quarterback?

Well if they make a move to get Leinart then the answer would be no.

Right, I don't see the Jest holding on to that 7 pick. But if they do, I don't see them passing on Young either.

Well besides David Carr, I have never seen a QB take a beating like Patrick Ramsey and keep lining up under center. He is tough, so if your line sucks, he is used to it.

Speaking of sucks (he, he) how would you like to be a Redskins fan and have like no picks on the first day of the draft? Or do they have one?

couple obvious misfires....

Where's Bobby Carpenter? It's a bit odd to be projected at 21st and then to go with the STeelers and then to fall out completely.

I don't think Ferguson is going to last until pick 4. Honeslty I don't think he will get past the Saints.

I'm not surprised that Donte Whitner is going at #16. That 4.38 40 and the fact that he hits like a freight train probably looks GREAT to the NFL scouts.

And finally, does anything actually believe that Vince Young is going to last until 7th?
