I've had a mule deer come out of the woods in front of me when I was on my bike. It was like it materialized. Fortunately I was going slow enough to miss, and it helped by the way it got out of the way. But it could have gone much worse, and there was little I could do about it.

I know many people who have never been in collision with an other vehicle, earned a moving violation, or other wise wrecked their vehicle that have hit deer and run off the road.

Have you ever hit a deer, or come close, in a car? You're lucky to have a quarter second reaction time, and even it you do, it's usually too late. Not even long enough to even think the bad words before you hit!

Being an expert has nothing to do with it.
