yeah exactly.

I was listening to Jim Rome the other day.....he had a 12 year old girl on there by the name of Dakota something.

She won a high-school state championship in golf on a boys team as a 12 year old. That's kinda freaky.

Look, you can believe me or not, I don't care: the song that CBS plays in the background while the leaderboard is being shown IS called "Augusta." Although the CBS version is an instrumental, there are words to the song, and Dave Loggins wrote the words. Don Cherry adapted the music, as I recall.

There are a number of versions to the song, (the CBS version and the USA version, for instance, are markedly different) and the CBS version is highly protected and not commercially available.

12-year-old boys are often smaller than girls the same age. Once the boys get their growth spurt and start building upper-body strength, the difference becomes material, golf-performance-wise.

It was a HIGH SCHOOL varsity team.

I wonder if she's a very large girl? With earlier puberty these days, young girls can get pretty big! She must have got a waiver to play on the high school team, probably because the junior highs didn't have a golf program at all.

I don't know if it's a waiver or just parental permission.

When I was in 8th grade I was moved up to the varsity football team as a fullback with my parent's permission. It might be similar there.

apparently this little girl's mother has cancer and the girl is playing with Annika sorenstam next week (or maybe it was this week? I don't know).

I hope the young lady has a great experience. Golf is a wonderful game, and *if* men and women can compete as equals, I'm all for it.

That's the thing.

as high as I am on Michelle Wie (she's a freak of nature being over 6' tall and all that), I don't think that this will ever become a normal thing.

Well, if Michelle Wie can compete as an equal on the PGA, when she's an adult, good on her! My cousin's daughter (from the tall side of the family :-) is over 6 feet, but she's not into any sports. Being a giant should give her some authority as a schoolteacher, at least!

Her dad is 6'5", an ex-Marine, currently a high school principal. Her mom is 5'11", and was the first woman to serve on an aircraft carrier in normal operations. Good genes!

From an April 2005 Golf Digest interview with Jim Nantz:

GD: Love that Augusta theme song, too.

JN: You'd be amazed how many letters I get in a year about that theme song ["Augusta," by Dave Loggins]. People want it for their daughter's wedding, or they want to get their hands on it for the music: Who wrote it? What's it all about?

You will see here in a couple years when Michelle Wie earns her PGA card and ends up playing full time with the men

Never happen! Annika Sorenstam, unfortunately due to media pressure, learned her lesson at the 2003 PGA Colonial where she never even made the cut. I will never forget her tears after the 18th on the final round. She had no business being there and she knew it but there were sponsors to satisfy and the media to play up to.

Why the media frenzy over Michelle Wie I do not understand. Other than 6' tall and only 16, she has no major accomplishments in golf. In fact, at the most recent Sony Open in Hawaii she didn't even make the cut!

The media is desperate to get a female into the mens PGA and will do whatever is necessary even to the detriment of the playing psyche of a mere 16 year old girl to accomplish their distorted agenda.......

If her handlers were smart they would ban the media from her life altogether and let her develope first as a teenager and second as a young female golfer........

Lets all meet back here in 14 years to discuss her accomplishments, I have a gut feeling that she won't even be in the women's top 25........
