'24' is a Show Full of Surreal Life Lessons
Morning Call ^ | 4/9/06 | Renee A. James

If you watch Kiefer Sutherland and "24," you learn to handle 60 minutes of tension, heartbreak and deception each week. And that's just between the characters of the president and the first lady.

But although fans love it, even the most ardent learn to overlook a lot regarding plot devices and characters.

Example: Jack Bauer, toughest guy on the planet and lead terrorist hunter, who can withstand torture, gunshots, drugs and severe mental anguish, found a pretty cool job for his annoying daughter, Kim.

After her stint as a runaway and a troubled teen in season one, she became an agent at the Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU).

Kim, whose previous claim to heroic fame was escaping a wildcat while lost in the mountains of southern California, was now among the elite specialists who would save the lives of everyday Americans should the very worst take place. God help us.

17. If my opponent has a sidekick or henchman, he will never have a sensible name like 'Rick,' or 'Steve.'

LOL!

It was a cougar.

Ha, I never heard him say that. Not disputing it, just saying my brain apparently pays attention every time he's says there's no time to do this or that, but apparently never hears it when he says he's sorry.

Many people call it the greatest show ever--I call it mildly entertaining at first, then more and more annoying as the season progresses, until the point where I can't watch it anymore.

I have to agree, I gave it up after two seasons.

Some years back I watched a movie (Real Time???) which covered ninety minutes of a man's life. His wife and children were captured by terrorists. He was given a gun and told his family would be released if he assassinated the First Lady at an upcoming press conference. The show had dramatic tension so thick you could cut it with a knife. A ninety minute movie about ninety minutes in the life of a reluctant hit man.

24 on the other hand takes one day and dribbles it out an hour at a time (actually 40 minutes discounting the commercials) over a period of months. If I recall correctly during the first two years they even went into reruns for a month or so to drag it out still further. To me it was just one big yawn. The only mysterious part of the show was that none of the protagonists needed to eat, drink, or go to the restroom (ever!). The dynamic of the show is bass ackward and if you can’t guess that Jack Bauer is gonna win come hell or high water there is no hope for you.

I remember a short lived series w/ James Garner, returning home to the southwest after the Spanish/American war. He became the sheriff of "Nickels" Arizona. The series was canceled and in the last episode Jim was shot dead, they had his funeral and a big party at the saloon, then they laid him away in boot hill. Thus precluding any chance for reruns!

Regards,
GtG

"Same here. He is the most sleazy character on TV. I don't care what party he's supposed to belong to. LOL!"

President Logan? He's such a smarmy weak jawed typical politician that I'd like to beat up the actor who plays him if we ever met on the street!

Truly a great performance.

I think Jack Bauer represents America's fantasy of what everyone wishes the federal government could and would be. The truth is that the government will 99.9% of the time fall way short of Jack Bauer's high standards.

When has the government in 24 ever met Jack's standards? He's forever going outside, under or above the bureaucratic red tape to do his job.

Logan wasn't supposed to be back for Season 5 but Gregory Itzin got such good reviews that they decided to bring him back.

Logan is a traitor but Itzin deserves an Emmy for how well he has played Logan.

it will break my heart if Chloe is somehow revealed to be a turncoat.

NEVER! And if they kill off Chloe I'll never watch the show again. Seriously.

I've seen a lot of threads on Free Republic about this show "24." Is it any good?

Last year I got hooked on it big time. I went out and got the first three seasons on DVD. Year One (or Day One), I thought was fairly average. They got progressively better. Season 4 remains tops however, followed by this year.

If I recall correctly during the first two years they even went into reruns for a month or so to drag it out still further.

Actually they had to take a break for editing to catch up with filming. That's why it doesn't start til January now.

They only reran current eps on FX for one or two seasons. It would air on Fox, then the following week it replayed on FX just before the new ep aired on Fox. 24 never did reruns. American Idol debuted during the 24 break.

That simply can't happen. That would be the "jump the shark" moment that would send the masses to the studio with pitchforks.

Absolutely agree. Jack may be the muscle of the show, but Chloe is the brain. (And the heart--awwww :)
