I actually prefer it when they sing songs that people have not heard before because whatever you hear from them in the future is going to be new. Plus, is this a Karaoke performance or a singing competition? I'd rather see them stand on their own merits rather than live off of another artist's glory.
Last year was the first year I watched this show, and I started when there was only about 5-6 left. I thought it would be interesting if once it got to where the contestants were singing 2 songs each a night, that they all had to sing the same song for one of them. It would be interesting to compare.

Oh, and I meant to add, I like hearing them sings songs I know. Then I'm not distracted trying to catch the words and the way they sing it.
