Hi to the three of you...I happened to notice your discussion of 'Someone To Watch Over Me.' Surely one of the top 10 or 20 popular songs ever, it was written by George and Ira Gershwin for the musical 'Oh! Kay!', which opened on November 8, 1926 at the Imperial Theatre, New York. Written for Gertrude Lawrence, the "Kay" in the musical, the song was originally sung from a female point of view.

ASCAP has listed the top five love songs of the 20th Century by decade, and 'Someone to Watch Over Me' was #4 in the 1920's.

'Someone To Watch Over Me' has been sung and/or recorded by literally hundreds of singers, both male and female, worldwide. Almost everyone who's anyone in popular music has done his or her version.

I'm a little disgusted with the AI producers using classic popular songs for a "Rod Stewart genre." I really enjoy Stewart, but the standards he's been recording in recent years are not his songs any more than they are the songs of hundreds of other recording artists who have done them before. I would much rather AI use Stewart's original material -- but I suspect he won't let them.

Thanks for the history lesson!
So 'Someone to Watch Over Me' was originally written for a woman!
It does seem more female friendly.

PS to my 5,674: In 1926, society expected men to take care of themselves. Women needed someone to watch over them. In 2006 I think this has been totally reversed. Otherwise how do we explain all the weepy, "metrosexual" guys around these days?
