C.J.: Paris' 'Idol' nature is no act, her friends insist

Paris Bennett can't possibly be as perky as she seems on "American Idol," can she?

"My girlfriend Rhonda Jenkins asked me that," said Twin Citian Joyce Mayes, who is the mother of one of Bennett's two best friends. Her daughter Kiana, an Edina High senior, and Cally Eastman, an Edina grad, were interviewed recently at Bellanotte by an "AI" crew for a piece about Bennett, who also attended Edina High. That piece may air on the FOX-TV show in the next week.

"She is perky and funny. She laughs a lot, and I think she is excited about the whole experience," Joyce said.

Said Cally, who is in Oklahoma attending Victory Bible Institute: "Yes, Paris is as perky as she seems on TV. She's loud and wild and crazy; a ton of fun."

The Mayeses and Eastman are going to L.A. this week to see Bennett and be in the audience for a show.

Although Paris is an incredible singer (it's part of her lineage -- her mom is recording artist Jamecia Bennett and her grandmother is singer Ann Nesby, both alums of the Sounds of Blackness), she reportedly had another career aspiration.

Cally, the daughter of Wendy and Ace Eastman of Robbinsdale, said Bennett once wanted to be a doctor. Joyce suspects that ambition may have changed "now that this has happened."

Because Joyce is a hair stylist, I asked what she thought of Paris' poodle-ears coiffure. "Those are her ponytails," Joyce corrected me. "That's how her hair is on the 'Paris Bennett American Idol' T-shirt."
