Vanderjagt to sign with Cowboys

Posted: Thursday March 23, 2006 9:40AM; Updated: Thursday March 23, 2006 9:53AM

By Don Banks, SI.com

Mike Vanderjagt, who was not welcomed back to Indianapolis this offseason despite being the most accurate kicker in NFL history, has agreed to terms with the Dallas Cowboys, an NFL source confirmed to SI.com.

Terms of his deal with Dallas were not known, but Vanderjagt visited the Cowboys on Wednesday and agreed in principle to a contract that is expected to be completed and announced at some point Thursday.

Vanderjagt, who will be 36 on Friday, spent the past eight seasons in Indianapolis, and was 23- of-25 in field goal attempts in 2005, with a long of 48 yards. But that accuracy did not count for much in an AFC divisional playoff game against the Steelers when he badly missed a 46-yard attempt on the final drive. The Steelers went on to win the Super Bowl as the conference's No. 6 seed, while the top-seeded Colts, who were started 13-0, dealt with another bitter playoff disappointment.

Vanderjagt is the second headline-name kicker to switch teams this week, following Adam Vinatieri's signing with the Colts. The former Patriots star became the league's highest paid kicker when he received a five-year deal to replace Vanderjagt. The contract calls for a $3.5 million signing bonus, and is worth $7.5 million in the first three years.

The acquisition of Vanderjagt ends the Cowboys' revolving door at kicker. Dallas had three different kickers in 2005, and the 9-7 Cowboys lost three games by three points or less, narrowly missing the playoffs. Dallas kickers were just 20-of-28 overall last season, missing three from 38 yards or less.

Why would the Colts regret it? They just signed Vinatieri.

Vanderjagt is better or, at least, no worse, than Vinateri. The Colts' decision to cut him was an act of pettiness.

Bunch of babies.

If Dallas is fortunate, they'll have a one-year honeymoon with T.O.

Owens is the best wide receiver in the NFL.

Owens is poison. No sane organization would want him in their clubhouse.

Yes, Landry coached Irvin during his rookie year. Jerry Jones fired Tom the next season.

Same thing was said about Charles Haley when Jimmy Johnson brought him in in 1991.

Two Super Bowls later, Haley turned out to be the key ingredient.

The interesting thing will be TO vs. Parcells; no offense to Eagles fans, but Andy Reid isn't exactly the kind of "GRRRRR" coach that Parcells is.

Owens doesn't need a buddy; he needs a daddy. Parcells knows the role of "daddy." He kept Keyshaun under control this past season; there wasn't a peep out of him.

Owens may be different, but I'd bet Rosenhaus has told him this is his last chance.

The Colts are going to regret not re-signing Vanderjagt, as are others in need of a kicker for not signing him.

The Colts got Adam Vinatieri. Vanderjagt may be a better kicker, but with the game on the line, who do you want kicking, Vinarieri or Vanderchoke?

Vanderjagt was a diruption to the team. An excellent kicker, but also one who is 0-2 in critical playoff kicks. His huge ego and personal conflict with Manning sealed his fate. It was the right move which will create a much more united lockerroom.

Yes, but when playoff games are on the line, vanderchoke is 0-2, while Viniateri is perfect.

This is good news. I cannot describe the disaster that was Cowboy kicking last year.

Regarding T.O., ugh, I just can't embrace him, though I confess to be excited about what he will probably do to our offense.

Landry coached Irvin for one year before he was fired. Landry drafted Irvin.

Any time there's a problem in Indianapolis, it seems Manning is right there in the middle of it.

His silly complaining about his "protection" after a pathetic performance against Pittsburgh tells me the boy has still got some maturing to do.

true but you need someone to get you to the playoffs and cortez and all of the other fools that came through Dallas and Tuna took a bite out of em and said GRRRR to they sucked beyond belief. Practice makes better not perfect.
