Run iPod Diagnostics

READ MORE: iPod

Methodshop.com explains ways to do deep diagnostics on your iPod. It’s starts be talking about how to get into diagnostic mode and then has overviews of the various tests you can run.

I’d bet many out there didn’t even know there was a diagnostic mode. Well, now you know.

I wasn't able to get this to work with a 4th Gen, but maybe someone will find it useful.

I read about the diagnostic modes on a thread at the iPodlounge a while back, but forgot how to put the Pod into the diagnostic mode.

I hope that's not your iPod in the photo - the sad iPod on that screen means that iPod needs a trip to the service center.

I have an HP-Apple 4th Gen iPod.

Once I had kept it unused for about a whole week. When I switched it on, it displayed some sort of altered menu which I think was a diagnostic test page.

I have an HP-Apple 4th Gen iPod.

Me too -- 40 GB from Costco.

Let me know if you're able to access the diagnostics -- I couldn't.

I was able to do it. Cheesy interface, that diagnostics menu.

1... First put the 'hold' switch to 'off' position (the
white indicator will be visible).

2... Press 'menu' and the center button together for 12
seconds. You'll see the apple logo appear. Now before
this logo disappears, hold down the 'previous track |<<'
and center button together for another 12 sec. You'll
see the iPod perform a "RAMPASS" test.

3... Press the 'play/pause >||' button to enter diagnostics
setup.

4... You'll see a menu, which can only be navigated by
pressing the 'next track >>|' button to go down the menu,
and the 'previous track |<<' button to go up the menu. The
center button is to select the chosen item from the
menu. The touch-sensitive scroll function is disabled
in the diagnostics mode.

Ah, OK -- worked that time.

The key seems to be to keep holding down the center button throughout.
