Just think of all the square footage and installation labor currently present in/on American roofs? Sittin' there keeping the rain out and the sun out, could generate a lot of kW in a 20-25 yr lifespan.
Heck just 1/2 of a roof in the sunnier areas in the US could safe a lot of $$$ and oil, and natural gas. Just wish someone somewhere could somehow make the items here and cheap.......
