Most important American Idol judge? It’s Paula Abdul
MSNBC ^ | 03/21/2006 | Andy Dehnart

COMMENTARY

By Andy Dehnart

On a recent “American Idol 5” performance show, host Ryan Seacrest asked judge Paula Abdul to compare this year's finalists to past groups.

Here’s what she said: “Ryan, I think this is the most unique, well-diverse, most-talented and most talked about top 12 that we’ve ever had. There’s not a day that people don’t come up to me and everyone has different favorites, so it’s anyone’s game, and it’s exciting as can be.”

Paula said 50 words, but she actually said not much at all. In Paula’s universe, stating the obvious incoherently qualifies as answering a question that demands subjective, critical analysis. This isn’t really a surprise, as she does this all the time.

A few weeks ago, Ryan asked her why the show is more popular this year. Paula said, “I think we’ve a gained a larger audience.” Yes, Paula, that is the definition of “more popular.”

In fact, Paula Abdul rarely answers the question just as she rarely offers a negative critique of a performance. If she does offer some kind of criticism, she buries those comments inside so many layers of fluff and drivel that it requires detailed analysis just to figure out what she really said. After she’s done, she claps her palms together as if her nails were drying, or as if she were a seal still learning how to perform. It’s absolutely maddening. Based on her lack of actual judging, she’s not even fit to be a judge.

Except Paula Abdul is the most important judge “American Idol” has.

When judging the contestants’ performances, Simon Cowell basically says something like, “You really sucked just then, mate” while Paula tends to say, “Puppies kittens bunnies teddy bears not the best song choice for me but that’s okay, sweetie, sunshine happiness flowers.”

drunk is what the poor people engage in. she's probably being well served by her physician for prescribable ailments, bad hair, nail chips, that kind of stuff.""

She has suffered very bad back problems for a number of years. I suspect she is at the point where the average pain meds aren't solving the problem, and the docs have no magic answers for in the way of surgery or therapy.

Got me. Word is they all flew to Vegas this week to sing with Barry Manilow and he's got an album of 50's songs out.

At least it's still better then showtunes night. You know that one is coming.

Ah yes, the horrid showtunes night. Though, Pee Wee singing something from The Sound of Music could be humorous.

At least having a whole decade of music doesn't pigeon-hole them like 'Stevie Wonder Songs' did last week.

Met Paula back in the mid '80's (1985-87)at a cabin near Kerr Lake in Va. Her uncle's place to be exact; for her to get away from the Hollywierd crap.

OK looking, a little flabby at the time, hair up and pulled back, not much tan, no makeup, sweatshirt and tattered jeans and tennis shoes. I thought her backside was a little wide at the time.....she looked really worn out and just needed to relax.

Us guys went on about cooking up some striper and did some drinking and left her alone while she sat on the upper balcony for a while. There was only one other girl there then and it's amazing that 20+ people kept there mouths shut as to 'who was up'.

She thanked all of us then for not treating her as a celebrity.....no big deal....she even did a lot of the dishes after the meal. OK girl, I reckon, hard to know for sure in a brief hello and only being around her for about 5 hrs. Some of the older gents were a little brave after a few drinks and hittin' on her a little.....that was funny, 'cause I know that the 2 that seemed 'interested' the most were just really just teasing the crap out of her.....she took it all in stride and put them in their places cordially.

That's very true. Hopefully they picked some rockin songs and not snoozers.

I think she's drunk most of the time.

That is debatable.
What is not is that she is in pain most of the time.
She has sustained serious back injuries in years past which cause her a great amount of pain and discomfort.
I don't doubt she is on medication for it.

Isn't that the only reason to watch American Idol?

For the initial tryouts?

:)

I so want Katharine and Elliott to break out with something awesome! They are both so good, just need a kick in the pants of some kind.

I agree about Elliot.

For some reason I just can't get on board the Katherine bus. I know a lot of people like her, but I don't see her appeal. I don't know what it is, but something about her rubs me the wrong way. Maybe because she hasn't shown much personality yet?

Could be. I understand what you mean. Just like I don't get where people say that Paris is annoying, but she can sing. I think she sucks.

I can't wait for tonight. It's usually one of the highlights of my week.
