We needed a translater for something when we lived in Germany, and I told the woman we needed someone who could speak English. She said, "I don't speak English. I speak American!" I've never forgotten that distinction.
There is, obviously, American English, British English, Irish English, etc. And lots of dialects for each.
There are at least a dozen different accents in this country!!
