There's a few alternatives out there. Macs are good systems (and especially with the recent version of OS X), but to get a Mac requires some serious $$$. Linux is another option--it runs on PC's, can be had for free, and there's a variety of support, both in-house and all over the Net.

Then there's the Unix derivatives, Amiga, OS/2 (reincarnated as eComStation), and a host of others.
