I'm so jealous of your setup! I finally have one of my kids rooms for my sewing/project/computer room. I'm thinking of buying a serger, but, I've never used one. I still sew the old fashioned way, kind of take pride in how my wrong side looks. Any specific brands that are good?

Glad to hear your safe and sound from Katrina. I'm just north of Milwaukee. We're 'almost' neighbors.

My parents RV for 4 months, then come back home for the good weather. Usually Texas, to Florida. They love it!

Indy....whatever serger you end up buying, DON'T go for an inexpensive one. A used one from a local dealer is fine!!

Find a dealer who you like...and (oh boy) deal with them!

:)

That way, if/when it needs repairs or IF you need help running it...you've got access. Just go around and look at different name brands and see who is NOT pushy in selling to you, and how comfy you are with that store.

I won't say anything about buying Pfaff anything and everything, OK? ;)

Good afternoon, all!

I found out last week I'm going to be an aunt...three times over! My sil goes next week to see for sure, but she is possibly having triplets! So, I've sprung into action knitting blankets. At the pace I go I'll need the nine months to finish. LOL!

Thanks, I'll keep it in mind if I decide to go that route. With my first granddaughter coming, I'll probably be sewing more. Teenagers just don't want 'homemade' clothes .... LOL

My sewing machine is a kenmore, it's been a gem! It's going on 25 years. It has some 'fancy' stiches (the ducks and trees are useless), but only about 20. I have a good buttonhole attachment and the various feet. I don't really need all that gismo stuff. I looked and new models, and it's all plastic junk. I think I'll just take it in for a makeover.

The older machines are fantastic!!!

I used to teach sewing at Joann's and saw a LOT of different machines from students. One lady bought a $99 Singer from one of those hotel sits you see advertised...she had it for about 1 month and it went down. Plop. She had to send it back, and didn't get it back for 3-4 months.

These ladies think it's THEM who can't sew...and really, it's the machine. I LOVE the old workhorses.

BUT, that said....I'd STILL look into a serger. Once you get past that palm sweating, heart palpitation, throwing up sensation of threading it the FIRST TIME... :) ... you'll wonder HOW you ever made it without one...

:)

Yes ... Babylock ...Imagine, Imagine Wave or Evolve .. pure artistry in engineering. Jet air threading in the loopers, automatic needle threader .. just so easy.

Find a Babylock dealer and get a demo and test drive before you buy anything. I bought mine about 4 yrs. ago on eBay, but of course the due diligence, comparisons, feedback checking, etc. is a requirement.

I've been sewing for about 35 years. My sil's new machine has an automatic threader. When I threaded her machine, she said, aren't you going to use that? Nah, i'll just stick on my glasses and put it in. Then, there's a buttonhole lever, she accidently put it on, and she could only sew in reverse. I spent about 30 minutes trying to figure out what the heck happened. And, you can't get into the machine, everything is sealed. I like to get into my machine and wreck the tensions even worse!

They're awesome ... believe it or not, there's a Pfaff serger out there that uses 10 spools of thread!! I'd go crazy with all the needle threading and thread watching ... 2 is bad enough 'cause my Imagine needle threader is behaving.

Have you sewn on this Pfaff serger, BG?? Tell me .....tell me....

"Imagine needle threader is behaving" = isn't behaving right.

EEEEEEEEEK! 10 spools???

Nope. I don't own that one. I have the dinosaur 4740.

And an old Juki 3 thread for rolled hems only. No. I didn't go buy the second for ONLY that...I had bought it for my mom, she kept it for over 10 years and finally gave it back...
