Re: Hollywood -

It's hard to believe that this is the same industry that turned out a steady stream of patriotic feature films, stirring newsreels, and traveling USO shows during WWII in order to assist the war effort and keep morale high at home. Of course, back then, Hollywood's leading men actually served their country, rather than siding with its enemies. Openly deriding their own military and its Commander-in-Chief would have been as unthinkable for Hollywood stars of the 1940's as it is commonplace for those of today. Tyrone Power, Jimmy Stewart, Charles Bronson, Eddie Albert, Clark Gable and others put their lives on the line in order to serve the greater cause of Freedom. Today's "stars" would rather be seen cavorting with Communist dictators like Fidel Castro or Castro-wannabes like Hugo Chavez than in the company of anyone wearing the uniform of the US Army.

Whereas many Hollywood film stars of the 1930's, '40's and '50's came from modest backgrounds, and were hard-working, self-sacrificing, and patriotic - today's entertainers seem almost uniformly spoiled, self-absorbed, ill-mannered, and poorly-educated. The contrast is striking for anyone who recalls how America once was so much poorer in material wealth, but so much richer in spirit, and where our screen heroes reflected our deepest values rather than our basest impulses.
