dictionaries ad nauseum, internet | March 9, 2006 | secret garden

Posted on 03/09/2006 6:20:24 AM PST by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

Hobson's choice \HOB-suhnz-CHOIS\, noun:
A choice without an alternative; the thing offered or nothing.

Example sentence:
Fagan's defense revolves around his insistence that he faced a Hobson's choice and had to act.
-- Laura Parker, "Discovery of daughters never followed by reunion," USA Today, May 11, 1999

Etymology: The origin of the term Hobson's choice is said to be in the name of one Thomas Hobson (ca. 1544-1631), at Cambridge, England, who kept a livery stable and required every customer to take either the horse nearest the stable door or none at all.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Good Morning Class. Welcome to School!

Here is my example with WFTD.

We faced a Hobson's choice back in 1996. Either vote for Bob Dole or stay home.

excellent idea, by the way, SG! kudos! I had been thinking that maybe we should do something with phrases like this one, and Focault's Pendulum, Occaam's razor etc,

Dole was "anointed" by the repubbie-powers-that-be, probably the worse pres candidate possible running against a demo candidate who could have been defeated!

(Clinton won strictly because of Perot's siphoning off opposition votes TWICE. I'm just not sure yet what Perot got from the deals: Y2K contracts for his company?

Good word/phrase. IMHO, that's what we'll have on the next Pres. Election cycle. Presently we've no one in the Republican stables who has (what was it the Dems called it?) the "gravitas" to keep the WH. A Hobson's Choice: Hillary or the Runner Up.
