BTW the first Intercollegiate football game was WON by Rutgers in 1869! How do I know. When I attended Rutgers there was a Historical Marker in front of the gym which stood on the ground where this epic battle was waged. Every Frosh had to know this fact!!!
Rutgers 6 Princeton 4

Which, coincidentally, is the last time Rutgers ever won a football game.

As a matter of fact we would not beat Princeton again until the 1890s!!

My Freshman year 1961 we were undefeated. We were invited to the Fiesta Bowl. A Rutgers Alum by the name of Ozzie Nelson class of '19 was supposedly lobbying for Rutgers to be invited to the Rose Bowl since we were one of only two major college undefeated teams. But alas it was not to be since we were'nt a West Coast or Big 10 team!

Our President Mason Gross said no to the Fiesta Bowl since he did not see what we would prove playing against a "football" program where atheletics trumped academics. You see our that year our interios linemen were engineers. Two Electrical, one Mechanical and one locomotive, (kidding). They were also Dean's List students. Our Center was a Henry Rutgers Scholar which is one cut above Dean's List in English Lit. He is now the President of BBDO that Wall St Ad Agency that you might have heard of.

Sadly in the fall of 62 we lost to Princeton on the foot of Pete Gogalak but we did see the future of the soccer kick.
