"Surely light hair and eyes have more to do with making the most of available sunlight in a colder part of the world (e.g., for conversion to vitamin D) than with 'attracting men'. " I agree sexual selection may have had an influence at some point but, the environment began it all first. Dark people didn't get enough vitamin D and were always afflicted with scruvvey, and other crippling diseases. The lighter skinned you were, the healthier. Light skin/hair began to equal 'healthy' and white became beautiful.

This reminds me of Michael Crichton's book "Eaters of the Dead".
When Ibn first met the Vikings, he stated that the Viking women were pale, tall, thin and had hair red to white.
His women in Baghdad were short, round, dark haired and dusky in color.

THE modern gentleman may prefer blondes.
I've always preferred brunettes. But then I'm no gentleman.

Blonds could make better use of vitamin D.
It amazes me how scientists can be so ingnorant of other fields of science, especially one like nutrition which has more women than most. Wearing clothes because of the cold would make the ability to absorb vitamin D after it is formed in the skin oils highly desirable. Adequate vitamin D means better bones, better teeth, better formed pelvic girdles, and more live healthy babies born. No wonder they were popular. What hunter doesn't want sons?

Gee, you would think with all the starvation going on in Africa for the last few decades there would be a plethera of blondes with blue eyes.
I dont believe it either, not without a lot more evidence, but in all honousty, in africa there is a lot more sun so people with blond hair tend to have a lighter complexion and can get sunburned a lot quicker.
That problem would not have existed in europe.

One thing the men did, during the relatively small amount of time they had to themselves (if you
know what I
mean!), as they lounged around on the saber-tooth tiger pelts, was to sharpen small scraps of obsidion into razors. The women were eager to do
anything to please the scarce and highly prized men.
This is when the world's first huge population boom occurred!
(A little known fact is that the original use of the phrase "The Big Bang" was actually in application to this period of pre-history.)

I can't post the paparazzi shots of her on some beach. She isn't wearing enough. But the look is "Auschwitz."
