In later years, there was a TV series that starred Andy Griffith. He owned a junkyard and made a rocketship from things in the junkyard, and it was while watching that flop that I realized why the Professor never got the girl...he was a gadgeteer. That was his only purpose on the show, so he couldn't "fall in love." It would distract him from his "purpose."
