The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Hair do you know if the NAIS is going to go into effect soon, or is it just something waiting in the wings?

Gosh... I wish I knew. The USDA site speaks of it like it's a done deal. Implementing premises registration this year... all places where animals are kept must be registered... Implementing animal movement reporting by 2007-9.

There's been precious little debate about it, but this is HUGH.

Thanks. I wish I could get some spectacular pictures like you do but when they do something cute my camera has a delay.

Gross. I'm looking at something I got in the mail today. It's a flier (pun intended haha) for natural fly control. You buy paracites that eat flies I guess. Ugly looking creatures.

Chomp chomp. I never had any problems with my kids biting. I was talking to mom today and it seems I was a biter myself:')

Swallowing a spider to catch the fly?

I've edited my post over there , because of foul language twice. I can't believe this. Is there a group already going to fight this?

The horse groups that I thought would align squarely against it appear to be cooperating with it. I just don't get it.

Maybe. " Fly eliminators are shipped as parasitized fly pupae. in sawdust. Once hatched, simply disperse small HANDFULS or scoops every 3-4 weeks on:manure piles, under water thorghs, below bedding, corners of pens, and paddocks, and FEEDING SITES.

DC is kind of central. Let's do a horse freep at the capital. We would probably need to bring feed but there is a nice tank with plenty of grass by that monument.

Huh - I accomplish pretty good natural fly control just by spreading poo regularly during fly season so it dries out and flies don't lay eggs in it. I also can't prove it, but I think my many anthills on the property also feed on fly larvae. I sure see a lot of ants moving to and from manure piles.

Well I'm tossing it in the trash. I don't want to be responsible for tagging and keeping up with where they go:')

They work REALLY well. The stable down the street from me uses them. I am about to place my first order when I get back from Kentucky week after next.

They have about 10 acres with around 40 horses, and nary a fly around. I was amazed the first time I walked through their barn and it dawned on me that something was missing ... the flies.

I think that it's control in excess. Having to report when you go on a trail ride or a horse show, or when you switch owners in the same barn! It's so STOOOOPID! And Controlling! I could see myself being one of those people who gee... forgets to call in quite frequently.

I'd be tempted to call them every day, several times, to report every time my horse takes a shit!

And I honestly think they would be so overwhelmed with data if everyone cooperated, that they couldn't possibly sort through it let alone enforce it.

But they say it would be a felony not to comply.
