The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

It probably is safer to walk, if tripping or slipping is the fear. Personally, I've never had them trip going up, and I fear it more going down. Also safer for the rider to walk, if they arent expecting it and don't grab a hunk of mane they can get left behind. :~D

But for a pleasure ride, if Bay finds himself wanting to move out up it, it's not disobedience, he wants to because he feels he needs to.

Too bad about the group over there... I didn't realize you'd deleted your membership, but if they were monitoring all my posts and not posting them for hours, if at all, I'd quit too.

Where'd you get these kittens? Barn cats? Take pictures of them in the milk jug :~)

...Can't get used to those levers on each side that you drive with, the darn thing needs a steering wheel...

Oooo, I didn't know those didn't have a steering wheel. I don't think I'd like that either. Our bulldozer is like that. I've never driven it either, and don't know that I want to. I think pushing over trees is a little more than I want to tackle. But I always thought that a Bobcat would be handy to have for cleaning out stalls and such. A tractor with a front-end loader, even a small one, is awfully cumbersome to operate in tight quarters like a barn.

The weirdest thing I ever drove was a dolly, here at the plant. They made us all learn how to drive them one year when there was a potential strike in the making and they were thinking that they'd have to run the mill with salaried folks. Had to learn to drive forklifts too, but they were easy. They had a steering wheel. But the dolly had a single lever in the middle, kinda like the tiller on a boat motor, that controlled the rear wheels, so the darned thing steered bass-ackwards. To turn left, you pushed the lever to the right. It really messed with my mind.

It is a long story but they have the same mom as Frog's cat, Little B. One is black and the other a gray tabby, both tail-less. I tried to take a pic but they are in a large cage and my camera focuses on the bars. Argh! I did not have that problem with my 35mm canons.

I promised Frog that if you would take both the kittens, I would have my vet ship them by air freight to your vet. They have already had their first shots, an anti-flea bath and de-wormed. Litter box trained and about 8 wks old. I refused to let the animal shelter have them as I want them to stay together and to be inside cats. They are both females and I left them with the vet a few days while I was out of town. The ladies that work for the vet gave them toys to play with and several small sacks of food.

Cav, you're an awful person! Surely if you can't keep them you'll find them a home there? We're suckers for lost souls, but we've got our quota of voluntary animals :~)

Ours could never be inside only cats, the door is open too much. I do my best to get them inside by dark.

Thanks, I understand but if you change your mind and I still have them, they will be on their way to you. There is a third kitten, gray and tail-less that was adopted by a mother cat at my barn. It is promised to Frog as a barn cat when I can catch it. If she still wants it. : )

Well, I'm flattered that you would think me a worthy home for them, even this far away. :~D

We sure do miss our kittens, it was a blast having them. They're OK as cats, but not near as funny now :~)

That is the only bad thing about kittens, getting older. They can still be coaxed to play but like us, they slow down a bit.

Well, my plans for the cabin were shot due to having to work today. I went out to the barn last night and took Waylon into the woods. He was somewhat hesitant and spooky but we kept going. The guy with the gun was nowhere to be found (I think he got an earful from the stable owner)

It's amazing to me how far Waylon and I have come. I can sense a spook and move right with him now. He definitely watches out for me. Were a good team. I wish I could retire and move to the cabin but unfortunately I'm not independently wealthy.

Have a great weekend everyone....the weather is beautiful here.

That sounds great, and it's the relationship we all strive for with a horse. I've reached that place with Bay too. He's not a machine that doesn't react to anything, he's not bombproof, and yet I trust him because I can read him, and we've earned each other's trust. He might get all coiled up about something, but if I say "Bay, give me a break" he does :~).

Last time we were out, Bay stopped dead about 25 feet before a turn in the trail, and I couldn't see far. He does this sometimes, sometimes I know why, like I hear someone coming, sometimes I never see it, but he goes on. I spoke out, thinking if there was someone coming, they'd want to know I was there, and about then, a bicycle came around the corner - FAST. I was glad to have not been right at the blind turn right then. The biker stopped and stepped off his bike, like they usually do so we could pass. I said "My horse heard you coming and stopped short to wait for you!" He said "Smart horse" I said yeah, he is! :~)

I wonder sometimes when I don't see anything, if it wasn't wildlife that crossed and moved on. I usually take his word for it when he does that. He's usually been right :~)

Boy I tell ya... we've had every kind of weather today, never for more than 15 minutes at a time. One minute, sun, then a downpour, then dark grey and still, then wind. Very unsettled day.

Well, he's big enough to move a mountain I'd guess. Way too big for me :)
