The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

My mother saved all those old papers, and I've had them since she passed away. I never knew what to do with them, no one ever looked at them, and I was getting tired of moving them around, but hated to throw them out. I've bought a few to add to them over the years, Mark McGuires homeruns, Clintons impeachment, Princess Diana's death, but I just realized I don't have one from 9-11. I was asking Mack if he thought the newspaper offices sold back issues????

I have an Agnew resigns one, but I don't think I have the Nixon one. I just finished going thru the Nov 23 issue I have.It was almost exclusively about Kennedy. Some interesting things.

I think Harley has gained weight too. I've been slowly cutting back on his feed, but so far I haven't seen any loss. I don't want to cut him to much because I'm hoping I'll be working him alot more soon. But I really don't like fat horses, not that he is "fat". But he's fatter then I'd like him to be. I like them to "just" have ribs covered. I do think it's alot easier to get weight on a horse in the winter then in the summer even if you have good grass. I'm assuming it comes from them not working so much.

My daughter had a Q pony when she was little. He was great. A buckskin. From a distance you couldn't tell him from Rock. She rode the hair off that guy:), all over the neighborhood. There were 2 other girls in our neighborhood that were her age and they all had ponies. We called them the pony pack. They were always off on those ponies, riding thru puddles, playing tag on horseback. Our vet said one time when I took him in that he hadn't seen a pony in that good of shape in years:) I really hated selling him, but we just couldn't keep him once she out grew him, just didn't have the room.

Hey great news. Do you think they will be able to find the reason or is it going to be a guess? Have they done anything to him other then pull his shoes? Is he still on pain meds?

LOL,I didn't finish what I was going to tell you about why I'm making this scrape book:), I swear I think I'm getting senile.

I didn't want to throw them out so I posted an article here on FR to find out if those papers where worth anything. They're not. But someone suggested doing this, and passing it down to the kids/grandkids. I thought that was a good idea. I also have a big stack of Life/Look magazines. They are worth a tiny bit, so I'll leave them intact altho they are not in mint condition.

He's on a much lower dose of pain meds and the vet says he seems happy and he's moving around readily. They took more x-rays this morning, no change since the last ones.

I honestly don't know if they will find a reason. Reading through that site I posted, it sounds like the shoer is trying too hard to correct his hoof pastern axis for one, and two, he's too aggressive in paring out sole. The farriers on that site say not to take out any sole at all on a horse like him, unless it's dead stuff that flakes away easily. Also, Tuffy felt much better without those elevated rail shoes so that could also been a factor in him being so sore. Before the vet came out this last time, Tuffy wouldn't move at all unless forced, then he would shift all of his weight back then kind of scoot his feet. It was heartbreaking.

You just never know when those old articles will come in handy. Many many years ago, there was a barn fire at our old fairgrounds. I had saved the clippings. It was front page news because two people had died in the fire. They were caretakers for the many Standardbred horses stabled there. 21 horses died also.

When my 4-H club had a booth at the fair, about 10 or so years later, I posted the old clippings. It was a booth about barn safety. So, many people came by and stated that they remember that fire.

I was going to mention before how much I like Harley's cute little ears. My Appaloosa had big ears, and people made fun of him. I always said "you don't ride the ears"..lol

LOL:)

It's funny, I've noticed that ears are something a lot of people notice on horses, any horse. I swear Rusty had nice shaped ears, but lordy they were long:). When I first got him and he was so under weight, he looked like a donkey.

I guess because ears on horses are just so visible is why they are noticed so much, but your right, they shouldn't be a factor if the horse is a good riding one:)

Hey Hair, are you watching the thread I posted on horseshoes.com? The farriers are starting to disagree and it's getting interesting.

Thanks, it was in the 30's last night - highs have been running in the 50's. I think it will stay about the same through tomorrow with highs dropping into the 40's, lows in the 20's on Tuesday, through the rest of the week with rain and snow predicted.

I'll have to get out and look at her again in the light - Bob says he thinks she's brown but she looks bay to me. And I like bay :) of course, I can't think of a color I don't like if it's on a horse. Her momma was born solid also - I think she'll roan/spot like the Goer line does.

Good morning and thanks.

I think she's going to be a very pretty horse - and very long legs. We named her TE Classy Jax but no barn name yet.
