This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
It might just be too tall for him to step over. If it's at or near his hock, he can't lift any higher.
I'd be worried about that t-post too. Anything you can do to protect him from it? A piece of PVC pipe over it maybe?
You could take it at the trot, let him jump it :~D
Well that might be interesting. I guess everyone has standard horse vocabulary and then their own. Sarah Lee knows 'foot up" and "foot down". She may think I want to clean her feet:')
Harley has come to the conclusion his salt block is his toilet. I have to scrap poop off it every day. He very very seldom licked on it.
Rocky went thru a phase like what Pony is doing. I took his away too for awhile. When I put it back he doesn't do that now, but he does lick on it more the Harley does his...
Becky
I don't think so:), There is only a very narrow space to cross it, the high gate on one side and thick brush on the other. It's a tight squeeze.
I never thought about putting some PVC pipe over it, Might help. It's an awkward crossing, but he went so easy for a while, he took me by surprise the first time he started to refuse.
Becky
Jeepers. Well, I'll keep an eye on her, keep the water full, and see if she mellows out or I need to schedule her access to it.
He probably hurt himself over it and it's made him a little gunshy. If you can goose him into trying harder, he might get over it, so to speak :~D
I like her work and I love the name Mary Twelveponies :~D We bought that book for ecurbh... not sure if he read it or not ;~D
I have that book. I really liked it.
Becky
That's really weird :~D
Once every great while, Bay poops in his water bucket. Fills it. His water bucket is on the far wall from his normal poop area in his stall and he'd really have to try to back into it... so I know it's intentional.
I should be working but I'm watching the extreme cowboy competition. Wow! The guy rode his horse up in to the trailer and grabbed hold of the top, dismounting as the horse went in.
It's kind of hard to tell in the picture, but the trees on the far side come in pretty close to her off side
Becky
It's pretty tall... any chance you're eroding it down and it's getting even taller?
Where's that T-post... over where the end of the gate would swing?
LOL.
I don't think Harley is doing it intentional, he's just kind of a pig:)
It's funny how different horses are about where they poop. I had one other gelding that didn't give a flip where he pooped. Water bucket, feed trough, just wherever. When Rowdy lived here he always pooped in the same spot every time. If I missed a few days mucking out, it would be piled up like a mountain. Belle always pooped around the edges of her stall, never the same place but always at the edges...Harley is not as big a pig as Radar, but he's not as neat as Rowdy:) He does keep the side he stands on in the hot part of the day clean.
Becky
It's not level ground either is it? It looks like it slopes down a little after they cross.
It's straight out from the post that is angled about under the 02.
I don't think I've eroded it, I haven't really crossed it that often. It's only been up since this winter.
Becky
Thats' correct. He dug a drainage ditch that you have to down into to make the cross.
Becky
You could put some of that pipe insulator over the PVC too.
I would think that would make it harder to get the back leg up if a horse is trying to keep their balance with the front.
