This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
They do it at shows, particularly at halter.
I just wonder, if she was shown at all, or what. It doesn't make sense.
That pony is a trip. :-) I wish that I wasn't on the opposite coast, because I'd love to have a go at her.
What's that white strip on her whithers? Is it natural or a rub mark? Looks like a harness mark maybe?
I'm just facinated with my new channel. I was watching a girl the other day. I disagreed with her on some stuff but she mentioned that most bad horse behavior is the result of the rider. I believe there are just some crazy animals but I thought this was very true.
I am a big believer in lunging with one caveat ... "done correctly". Don't keep them on a small circle too long, change direction every 10-15 minutes, and use of proper equipment. Personally, I don't consider a halter to be proper headgear for lunging. I have been trained in lunging horses by a BHSAI instructor and according to classical dressage principles. We always started young horses out on the lunge, and I still lunge Henkell EVERY time before I ride and in between rides for conditioning.
Keep them most of the time on about a 20-meter circle, put on boots/wraps to protect the legs (especially the front ones), and no more than 30-45 minutes. IMHO, an hour is too long to be sending a horse around in circles. Also, use changes of gait (between gaits and within gaits) to vary the routine. One exercise that I use frequently is to spiral the horse in towards me slowly to about a 10 meter circle then spiral them out slowly back to the 20 meter circle. This really gets the horse bending through the body, aligns the spine, and makes him come underneath with his hindend to carry himself properly.
If a horse has not been lunged routinely, I would not go a full 45 minutes but would start out at 20-30 minutes max and build up the time from there.
Done properly, lunging is a valuable tool to gymnasticize and condition your horse. Done incorrectly, it can permanently lame him. BTW, the spiral in-out exercise is also very useful under saddle.
LOL! Nothing like a new toy to play with!
I agree that 99.9% of "horse" problems are really "people" problems. Most crazy animals were made that way by how they were handled. I don't deny that some horses have a more difficult temperament naturally than others though.
I've only popped one on the mouth once. I'm not sorry either. He thought I was dinner.
Just call him Jaws! LOL!
All one has to do is observe a group of horses for awhile. They are crystal clear with each other about their intentions with their body language. They "pop" each other when necessary, especially with babies to teach them their manners.
Usually, the pop only gets thin air because the intended recipient has already vacated the premises. If not, then the pop hits its target.
True. I know I didn't knock him back 10 feet. He moved.
No clue. I think it's injury not birth, but she's had it since before my friend bought her. We've speculated on what it is, but since she has more of a gutter there than a wither, it's an unlikely place for a rub, from saddle or harness. I've wondered if it isn't rain rot scarring.
She also has white hairs above and in her tail, and as you can see, she has a habit of rubbing her tail out.
Well, maybe you can come out some time and 'have a go at her' - you know, one of those extreme vacations, like bungee jumping, for adrenaline junkies :~D
Back from town. How was your ride.
I'm getting private e-mails from that woman:\ In one she explains about the "correcting" and invites me to a party at their house, and in the next she call types in a Becky with a last name that is of course not mine but another Becky that was at the ride (there were 5 of us), and says "I thought we were better friends then this, you should have come to us personally at the time. We would have told you the judges knew about the horse and the correcting".
I had told her earlier this morning that I was NOT going to do anything, that I was seeking clarification about abuse according to NATRC, so lets just let it drop.
I wrote her back just now and told her again to let it drop, stop e-mailing me, that I wan't that Becky, that she didn't know me, that I didn't care what they did with the horse, if she had no problem with the correcting my opinon shouldn't bother her, and that knowing who I was wouldn't change anything.
Jeez, some people.
Becky
Cyn's reaction is kindof funny.
6-6 twister Movie.wmv (1 MB version)
06-03-06 052.avi (44 MB full res version, if you have broadband)
Good grief... Maybe her "A" personality doesn't know the "B" personality also wrote a note.
Lol. I actually got the first version to play:) Yeah.
We get those all the time around here. It's interesting to see them move thru the woods and the leaves swirling. Cyn WAS funny:). I've never seen any of my horses react to one
Becky
~sigh~ we didn't ride. Not ruling out that we won't still, but we're not into it and I'll use any excuse from Bay not being ready to us feelin' tired. I didn't like the way Bay was plodding around earlier, and though he's better now, I think Buting him today and tomorrow and riding tomorrow would be better. I did let them out to pasture and he did move well when I got him running a bit so it's mostly just excuse.
ecurbh went to ~town~.
