The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

You know, here, in the sound, or at the ocean, people swim and surf in similar, partial wetsuits because the water is COLD and stays cold all year.

Down in your neck of the woods, or around a pool in summer, I think they look HOT more than anything else.

Now THOSE suits would be downright dangerous if you ever really tried to swim in them!

That overdress would just balloon full of water and drag you right down.

For playing on the sand, esp. if you are a redhead like my hubby and daughter, fine - but if I were still working as a lifeguard I would be REALLY annoyed at having to drag all that water weight back to the beach!

Somebody who made a comment on that site pointed out that a "board shirt" (a polypro shirt that surfers wear to avoid coral rash) is modest but not quite so odd-looking. I have a kayaker's top that is much the same, and I often wear it over my Speedo because it helps disguise my tummy.

The suits my kids used to wear looked like partial wetsuits and they were really cute and very modest, but they were tight and didn't have all that extra fabric. And like ya'll said, that much fabric in the southern heat, on the beach or at the pool, you'd have a heatstroke. I'd be cooler in a t-shirt and jeans.

The comments those people were making against the suits were priceless, though. It's always shocking to me when nice, moral people, with high standards, are mocked. I wanted to get on there and say, "hey guys, you're mocking the wrong crowd. Go after the girls with the flabby spare tire hanging out over the low rise jeans!"

I prefer to wear jeans most of the time.

I found that CTR website from a link Becky posted awhile back, they are trying to get her to give her last name. Don't do it, Becky!

Did you think I was lying:)

I don't plan on it until a mod. tells me I have to. Then I'll decide what I'm going to do.

No, I didn't think you were lying. I'm shocked that they asked you for a last name. Anyone can get on that site and post, it's a public site, so I sure as heck wouldn't put my last name. Tell the mod to kiss your furry butt if they bug you about it.

What would you do?

I received a private message, an explanation, for why this man was slugging his horse repeatedly during the ride, and it brings up a point to consider.

According to the explanation this horse had the problem of being "overly excited", as it was his first ride. When the horse was bought he had major problems, bucking, rearing, and hyper. He has gotten better, but at the ride was a chargey. According to the Parrelli methods,I was informed:), you have to correct a horse in a 3 second window. That is what the rider was doing, correcting in a three second window. My question, how would you guys correct this problem?

Me, when I've had a chargey horse, I either bring them to a full stop, stand a second and start again, or I circle the horse in tight circles 3-4 times then come out of the circles heading down the trail, and continue to repeat this till the horse gets the idea it's easier to go easy then to start to charge. I've never had a horse that this didn't work on, and fairly quickly, especially being consistent.

IMO, slugging a horse in the neck is NOT an appropriate method to fix this problem. And not necessairly because slugging one is actually hurting them much, it's just there is no connection between the punishment and the crime. Am I making sense. What do you all think?

LOL, I was just teasing you.

I'm not sure what the rules are on that site. I know we have been told to sign our posts, I didn't think it was so you could be identified personally tho. I know the girl that is one of the moderators over there and she knows who I am. Even if I gave my last name, I swear 99.99% of them still wouldn't know who I was. I'm not one of the more sociable people at a ride. I get a bit intense, and mostly just want to be left alone to focus when I'm there. I usually stay at my own camp site rather then going around socializing. I'm not rude, or a snob:). I had several people stop by and talk to me about Harley being a nice horse (or even one time, to inform me that Quarter horses aren't made for this sport:), and I speak pleasantly, but I don't seek out people to "visit" with, it's just not that big of a social event for me, so consequently I'm not well known among the other riders.

Good Lord, are they saying that slugging the horse was a Parelli method??? LOL. If the guy feels that the only way to control the horse is slugging him, he needs to go back to square one and start over.

You are right, they are wrong, the guy should have been disqualified if what he did was against the rules of the race.

I'm like you, I wouldn't be there to socialize, either.

What was your reply to the idjit that said Quarter Horses weren't made for the sport?

Well, according to the rules of NATRC, abuse appears to be very vaguely defined, and determined on a case by case situation.

According to the e-mail I got, the judges knew this horse was a "mess", and was surprised when the horse did not come in on check in sore. I don't know if this was an attempt on this person to convince me the judges knew what was going on and saw no problem with it so it was OK, or if it's the truth.

Who know, who cares. I was just trying to figure out what the rules were, but Celia spilled the beans:)

I just told her that I had competed a mare for 6 years, and never had a problem. That my P&R's were always good, and she did it fine. I told her I agreed that Quarter horses probably do need to be conditioned more then say an Arab, but that they can do it. And that the quiet nature of a Quarter horse kind of balances out with the higher strung Arabs:) (no offense meant to the Arab owners here:)

Who is Celia and which beans did she spill? I didn't read the whole thread.

If the horse was a mess he shouldn't have been there.

You handled that situation better than I would have. I would have gone back to the "kiss my furry butt" thing.

Good Morning.

Nice story about the foals, Hair. I asked Wildehunt if they had a story printed, being that is so rare.

One of the guys at work thought it would be cute to put his hand in front of my camera, when I took a picture of my cake. With the delay on a digital, I didn't see that the picture was of his hand. Only when I checked later did I see that. The cake had already been half gone by then. It was very good and had "Happy Gaming, Happy Camping and Happy Retirement" on it. I told him about it too. That made me mad.

We are going to pick up some flowers today. With this wet weather lately, I have nothing planted yet. At least it cooled off some.

Have a great weekend!
