This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Wow, is that our poster?
Becky
Cool! But 26 horses on 5 acres?! That's whatcha call High Density!
No, she's somewhere else...
This is a local story that appeared in one of our local papers.
I just thought she'd be interested... maybe wildehunt could get a little fame herself, if she wanted it :~D
I ~finally~ found the contact lens stuff I'd been searching for. Went to Target, but their shelves were still empty. Found it in stock at Top Foods, though, and got a 3-month supply. ~whew~
And stopped by the Forest Service office to get a new map of Capitol Forest.
It sure is. A lot more dense than I would want. Hopefully half of those are babies... But you know.... one of the bigger boarding stables here is only on about that much ground. Big barn, lots of stalls and two indoor arenas, a couple small turnouts and basically only one pasture I'd call large enough to really run and play in. And it's the "Mares pasture" where all the mares get turned out. I think she turns her stallion out there at night, to move around some. That must make him nuts, all those smells and no mares :~D
I think the geldings are out of luck.
Ah - cool. I was interested to know that even when they log, they don't move the trail, they keep it where it was and repair it if it gets disrupted. It happens sometimes, that they're logging in areas we ride through.
I'm sorry, but I think that being kept in a stall all the time is just no way to keep a horse! I know lots of people do it, but I don't think it's good for them, physically or mentally. I also don't think it's good for them to be kept by themselves. They need a buddy. And not just an buddy, but another horse. It's the way they were made. But that's just me.
RE: Salt block
Should I get one while I'm at the feed store, and if so, what kind?
I agree with you. Horses aren't meant to be stalled all the time, and it's not good for them.
The boarding stable I spoke of shuffles horses all day, turning them out in the arena, or one of the small turnouts for a couple hours, but that's not enough. The 'mares' are the only ones that have it good, they at least get the larger turnout all day, though it's not pasture, it's pretty much a big dry lot with that many. They dump hay out in the middle so they can browse.
My boarding stable I want stalls with individual small runs off each one, and I think I'd like to see those runs open to larger turnouts shared by two to four horses. It's tough to manage a large community turnout at a boarding stable, with horses coming and going all the time, I think the pecking order is always in flux and they inevitably scuffle. But a couple horses could and should be buddied up with another that is a good match, I think.
Yeah - lets try to set salt out again.
Read on the salt/mineral blocks they've got... some are intended for cattle and some for horses. Some have a fly inhibitor in them... maybe we can try that.
Fly inhibiting would be good.
We love fly inhibiting.
I don't think it makes the horse repellent, I think it does something to their poop to make larvae not hatch in it.
I don't see why they couldn't turn the geldings out with the mares. They're WAY more easy going than most mares.
Well, I'm outta here. BladeRider and I are meeting up for a ride on Sunday, so that should be fun. We'll be sure and take pictures! Seeya!
I've never had trouble mixing mares and geldings either. There's dominants and submissives in both 'genders'.
I don't get why some stables separate them.
Have fun on the ride, and do take lots of pictures :~D
That's why I want at least 20 acres, so that even beyond the small paddocks and larger turnouts there is also big pasture available where they can really run, and really graze.
I like my 4 acre pasture, it's big enough that a few horses can get plenty of room to really open up and RUN. When they're in smaller areas, or even in the back forty area that's treed and not so level and open, they just don't run and exercise as much. Even now, with the pasture split in half like I have it, it's not as good.
The NATRC site could get interesting now:). The poster that just asked for my last name is the wife of the man that was hitting his horse:)
Becky
LOL:)
I went back and checked, and not everyone does sign their last name, so I'm not going to.
This is what I don't like, this is a sign of politics, IMO.
Becky
I went back and checked her old posts, and she never signed her last name till the one she asked me who I was.
