It doesn't always have to be about competing either. I didn't mean it that way. I enjoy just being out in the woods, visiting with whoever, or just being by myself.

2J, question.
Can hens look like roosters? :)
Celia brought me a couple of roosters the other day. One of them is young, but definitly looks like a rooster, full comb, full wattle (Is that what those red hangy downy things are called), long tail feathers, slimer bodied. But awhile ago, it was out in the barn making the sounds just like a hen makes when she lays an egg. It didn't sound like a crow at all. And I don't think I've ever heard other roosters sound like that. I walked out there, it was perched on the stall wall. Below it was an old tub I use to water horses with sometimes, it had some hay in it, that looked arranged like a nest, but no egg.

I've been trying to define what it is I am competitive, or proud of, about.... because there is something. :~D I do compare myself to other horse owners I know and want to see myself as among the best of them at what I do.
My horse is not the most in shape or the most rugged, in fact, as you know, I'm contantly worried about him.
And brag about him as I might, he's not most finely trained or the prettiest, at least any more, with his big ole sway back and his stubbornness about sidepassing or standing still to wait on trail. He's not easy to handle always, but I think he gives me his best. And I don't look good on a horse any more, I'm too pudgy to have my equitation be the first thing anyone would notice.
I take pride in his care, in the fencing and accomodations they all get, and at his grooming when we go... and I take pride in horsemanship that keeps everyone safe, if not the most adventurous. I take pride in doing things the right way, and in good trail ettiquete.
Heh... it's the stuff that I am most proud of that makes me conflict when riding with someone like Tiff, who never gives any of that stuff a second thought, as she cuts off through unknown terrain at full speed with a cigarette and a beer in her hand. Takes deep breath :~\
oooh that looks ugly and scary! :-)
The dressage training that I've had has been countlessly useful on the trail. I can get my horse to move off my leg instantly, and it seems like he does it better on the trail than in the ring. Horses that have logged lots of trail hours are far more level headed and sensible than those who haven't. At least in my humble opinion.
Those are all very good things to take pride in doing.

You, like Bob, probably chuckle at me for ever doing that stuff. It's part of my snooty english past I still hang on to.
No, I don't chuckle at you for those things, really. If I'm taking my horse out in public, I usually try to clean him up.
I take great pride in the fact that I've never lost a point on not having my horse groomed, in fact I've gotten plus marks for him being groomed very well. Celia is the one that chuckles over that:). Belle was ALWAYS groomed even just here at home. But it's a lot of work:). Celia grooms hers for a ride about like I groom for every day riding:(.
I also take pride in the fact that (and I've been guilting myself that this winter I let this slip), my horses are in good shape. I've seen so many horses go down at rides because the rider didn't prepare them enough that I cringe to think of out of shape horses being asked to do more then they should. Their physical shape is as important as their appearance. I know you know that and don't push yours beyond their condition. You cringe over Tiff, I cringe over Celia.

I don't know! If you get a chance, post a picture and I'll give you my opinion.
I've heard of dominant hens actually crowing...don't know about roosters!
Nice rain, eh? We've gotten wave after wave of good soaking rain all day!
Oh, I know, the rain has really been nice. I wouldn't mind if it did this all weekend. You can hear the trees going "AHHHHHHHHHH":)

We need a thread for Tuffy on nursing and trail riding:')
I think Becky's just got a gay rooster ;~D
LOL that's what I think:)

Anyone in here a fan of Lonesome Dove?
I know lots of people (Bob) who are... don't remember if it's come up in here.
We bought it and watched the first episode last night and we found it to be really rather - um - boring... the story was sloooooow, the dialogue really strange (and delivered like a small community theater play) the characters odd (am I supposed to like any of these people?) and I can't for the life of me figure out why they included two pet pigs.
Does it get better?
I haven't seen it.
I'm finally getting around to catching up on the thread, and I'm going to try to keep my comments to a minimum until I've gotten to then end, but I just had to pipe up and comment on how STUNNING that paint filly is. You can't possible be thinking about selling her! She's gorgeous! Tuffy's looking good too. All the more so now that he's ambulatory!
Oh, I guess I better say that both babies are fine. The little colt is much smaller than the filly and took his own sweet time about finding the faucets, but he's running around the pasture with his mom and giving her fits when he stray's too far. I can't post pics until I get to work, but I've gotta work on Sunday, so maybe then. Monday at the latest. I got some video too. I don't know how any of it is, I haven't unloaded the cameras yet.
I adored Lonesome Dove!!! Stick with it, you'll learn to love all the characters. I don't think you are far enough into the series yet but there is a character named Roscoe Brown, played by Barry Corbin. I bought my miniature horse cart from him, he lives in the DFW metroplex (or used to).
Jeep's fine now. It was the bearings on the idler pully. Got a new pully for 20-something dollars and a new fanbelt for about that. I bought the cheap ones. No sense going for a lifetime warranty for twice as much on a car with that many miles! I sure was glad it wasn't the compressor coz that'd've been about $400 bucks. I won't say she's as good as new, coz that'd be a bald faced lie, but she'll go another few rounds anyways.
Bummer about the dental appt. There something about doctors and farriers that seems to make them like to keep you waiting.
Well, thank you ma'am for the nice compliments on my horses! I'm such a sucker for a loud paint. I probably won't sell the filly, we all like her.
