The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Trail riding isn't easy if you go beyong a walk. CTR's must be a blast. I would do it in a heartbeat. The terrain is varied, there are steep hill to climb and go down, obstacles to navigate, deer and squirrels to run away from... :-) "Trail riders" are good because they have to stay on the horse as they're doing these things.

I think riders who won't leave the arena are big wusses. It takes some real guts to take a horse out in the open with no fences. I don't think twice about riding a horse in an arena but out in the open, my adrenline is pumping.

Me too, and then for sure by the time I got back.

I got in 2 hours, was hoping for 3, but the rain is close. I've been hearing thunder for the last 45 minutes, and the sky is starting to darken. I hate riding in the rain, so I came home.

Glad you got in a little trail ride today anyway :~D

I just gave Bay his Bute, he's starting to distrust my advances... I don't really want to do this to him every day for very long or he'll become hard to catch. ;~D

Its tablets, that I mash up with the pill masher, mix with molasses and a little warm water and give him in a tube.

HHMMMM, I wonder why he wouldn't like that..??

Could you mash it up with the molasses and just put it in his feed, or does he pick it out?

And Bay takes it pretty well, once I've caught him. He's just starting to blow and walk away from me when I come out ;~D

What's funny is the pony hounds me for it. She smells the molasses and when I'm done, she'll lick all she can get off the end of the tube, so it doesn't taste bad, she just doesn't know she's not supposed to like it 'cuz there's Bute in it, and Bay does :~D

And pony's the one that's hard to worm. I think I'll take the wormer tube and dip in in molasses next time.

He won't touch grain if there's bute in there. He can tell immediately no matter how much I try to mask it. I tried. I guess they're pretty bitter.

I might, when the tabs run out (I'm still working on a big bottle of them) buy the big $50 tube of paste the vet had. It looked like wormer, but had about 50 doses in it, and you just gave them one or two clicks per dose. It might taste bad, but you don't have to give them very much and it saves me the steps of mashing and mixing.

Sounds like Rusty:)

The paste is easier.

Well, I could have still been riding, The rain isn't here yet, but boy, it's looking like we are really going to have a storm.

Wusses huh? Lol. Horse riding preferences remind me of nursing. Everyone things their area is better and they work the hardest and don't get enough respect.. Facts are whether you work days or nights or are a floor nurse or cooped up in ICU , none of it is better and all work hard . It comes down to what you like doing. I suspect it's the same with horses.

Would he take it if you mixed it with a little molasses?

I don't know if these will do it justice or not, it's more the way things feel, and sound.

I love thunderstorms, but then here, there's no chance of tornados with them... they're wusses compared to your storms.
