This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
nice kitty. Want an apple bar?" :')
I've seen leg bags too.
Oh - yeah - I guess you didn't completely forget ;~D
"nice kitty. Want an apple bar?"
I get the same results putting stuff in a ziplock bag. I swear my horses can hear treats being shaken in a plastic bag for a hundred yards and will nearly run over you to get to them.
Of course I know that the sound of plastic shaking would have Bay running in the opposite direction, so that trick wouldn't exactly work for you. ;o)
Bob carries with a holster on his hip but when I rode and carried I had a 38 short barrel and just carried it in a holster on my belt at my back. I always felt more comfortable with it not visible I guess.
Bucket plastic = good
bag plastic = bad
:~D
I have to go. I need to go run some errands. Talk later.
With it in the shoulder holster, I usually wear a big loose shirt over that to be discreet. I have an airweight that would fit in the small of my back... my .357 less so.
Do they allow hand guns on Forest Service land out where you live? They don't around here, and I never really understood why.
Yes. National and State Forests they do. There is both hunting (in season) and target shooting allowed in the forest where we ride, and you can pack for personal protection.
You can't be armed in most National and State Parks and maybe (haven't checked) not in a couple other kinds of lands, such as Wildlife Refuges.
Isn't the place where you ride State Park? I though it was, and that's why they don't do any logging, even salvage and fire prevention cleanup.
Yeah, I would think that the barrel of the .357 would be constantly poking the back of your saddle. I used to wear a fanny pack (quit laughing Sharn!) and it was always doing that and it got to where it was wearing a spot on my saddle so I quit wearing it. It was handy though because I could put my lunch in there and it had holders for 2 water bottles on the sides and I could just get off and go sit on a log and I had my lunch right there without having to rummage through the saddle bags.
No, it's National Forest. The part where they don't log or do clean up is a designated Wilderness Area, and some of it is a Wildlife Management Area, which means that they do allow controlled hunting at designated times, but it's all National Forest. So I don't understand the handgun ban. Maybe it's just our region. I don't know. We don't really have any large dangerous wildlife, like bears or cougars, but I've felt a little vulnerable sometimes when we've come up on some campers out in the middle of nowhere.
"Wilderness Area" - OK - we have a few of those too... and I wouldn't be surprised if there are some restrictions there. Where we ride is entirely working forest.
I'd have thought Alabama would have good gun law, but then, I thought Texas would too. I'm often surprised (pleasantly) that as liberal a reputation Washington has, our gun law is a lot better than anywhere else. We've had shall issue CWP since before they were fashionable.
Carrying in the state forest is unrestricted, or at least, according to state law for carrying handguns anywhere else. It must either be visible, OR you have to have a CWP. It's not without some potential for trouble with the Game Dept, if it can be construed that you might be hunting out of season. My 6-inch .357 would not normally be construed as a hunting handgun... but if I had a rifle or a big handgun with a scope on it, and a mule with empty pack bags, I might be in trouble ;~D. They're also a little bit touchy about driving around in a vehicle with a hunting arm anywhere reachable. Lots of poaching from vehicles and its forbidden to hunt from a vehicle at any time.
As it is, here, most game dept people would think it's only prudent to carry for defense, particularly if on foot. There's some risk, though rare, for a threat from bear or cougar... there's also some risk of stumbling upon a mobile meth lab at the end of a logging road dead end.
Sad but true. Little private marijuana patches used to be the problem, but meth labs seem to be springing up like mushrooms after a rain around here. I'd hate to run up on either one, but the meth labs seem to be a lot more dangerous, both in terms of the type of people running them, and the potential health hazard in the form of fumes as well as explosive capability. Those people are CRAZY!
True enough...
I think I can outrun even a meth-head on my horse, but I wouldn't want to be on foot if they think I've seen something I shouldn't.
I'm told they are, or used to be, rampant up there, the state used that as the rationale for gating many of the roads (that and garbage dumping, which is a problem). But I've never actually seen one or the evidence of one. From a selfish standpoint, it makes my road crossings safer that there aren't jeeps up there barreling around on ALL the logging roads any more, but it does threaten public access for everyone to the forest over a few bad doers. They just couldn't patrol all the roads up there.
Heh... I did come across some of the 'campers' up there, squatters and homeless survivalist types that live up there, when a friend and I were driving around a couple years back. We came across the 'camp' on the side of a logging road, looked like they'd been there awhile, and there were several people standing on the side of the road talkin'. I just gunned it past them. I didn't want to pass them slowly, if they wanted to step into my way, I was goin' about 50 mph ;~D
Just got back. Sorry no pictures. Forgot the camera. We had a great ride, even gave him his head in one place where we were loping....what a rush.
I also got brave and went part way down a new trail made by 4 wheelers. I was pleasantly surprised to see it circled a round to a place where I could pick up and old trail we use to use, but has gotten blocked further down. So this will make a nice nice loop. I would have looped the whole thing but where my old trail comes out, whoever made the 4 wheeler trail didn't see it. I thought I'd be able to find my way down it, but it's been so long, several years, since I've been on it, and it's all covered with leaves that I lost track of it. I just didn't have the time to mess around. I think I'll be able to find it easy if I go in from the other direction and mark it as I go. The thing that makes me the most nervous out there, is there is lots of old rusted fence line, some still up hooked to trees but some down, and now covered by leaves. I may have to walk it the first time, But If I can figure it out it will make a wonderful loop. Probably several miles. And it was mostly good hard pack dirt, very little rock, so a good place to long trot and lope weaving thru trees:)

2 X's I've rode up on stolen cars, once the thieves where there stripping it. Scared them as much as it scared me, they jumped on their 4 wheeler and took off.

Sounds like a great find :~D You're lucky that your place is so rural, here, I couldn't ride out without being in someone's yard.
According to the aerial photo from Google Earth, the area across the road behind us was pretty vacant, but that photo is a few years old and I haven't been over there to try to find access.
I'm with you on barbed wire... bring a cutter, in case you find some.
