The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

It's like she's saying "What is it? It's not quite a cat... but it's not quite a rat either. Dare I eat it?"

Has Tweek discovered the horses yet? Other than the sounds they make :-D

We'll see how it goes...

I think relationships like this are sometimes difficult and end badly ;~D

She did... she and Pippin ended up out in the paddock. She very nearly walked under Bay without even seeing him - he's too big to be in her frame of reference. He turned around to look at her and she suddenly ~SAW~ him. Spooked, she ran around behind his back legs to look again, still not seeing that the back legs were also part of the same animal. It was beyond her scope. ;~D

She finally bolted out of the paddock and reassessed the whole thing from a distance. ;~D

Oh what a riot. :-D The other day some of the geldings were bucking and farting around in the paddock. My trainer's little dog started barking and ran in there. One of the geldings, in mid-rear saw that the dog was right by him, and STAYED up there, and you could tell that he was looking for the dog. Very gently, and very carefully he set himself down again and looked around as if to say: "Hey! Where are you?"

That is one brassy squirrel! He must be saying "I KNOW cats, and YOU Miss Tweek are no CAT!" ;o)

That's cool about the geldings looking out for the dog. My bunch would be actively trying to stomp it. They HATE dogs. I don't know why, because they've never really been around them.

Mine go after dogs too.

Was funny when Rosie's little border got loose and went in with the horses with a not-very-well-thought-out plan to "herd" them. The herder became the herd-ed as the mares chased him around... I think Rosie's life was flashing before her eyes thinking she was about to see her new dog stomped to death by a horse ;~D

He appreciated the rescue at the gate and he hasn't been back in there since ;~D

Whew! Sounds like a close call. I'm glad he didn't get stomped, for all of your sakes because it would be almost as hard on you as it would be on her if it happened. When Truly nearly stomped my in-law's little dog to death, I felt so bad, even though it wasn't my fault, and it really wasn't the horse's fault. She was just doing what her instincts told her to do. And Hope has shaved a life or two off of one of my old barn cats too, so I draw up every time any of them gets within visual range of any of the horses. But now I know that I should never have a coyote problem, or at least not for long. ;o)

Well Celia and I are back. Whew, it's hot today. Horses were wet mud balls by the end. I hosed Harley off he was so nasty. He's tied to the trailer right now with a hay net and bucket of water. But we had another great ride. about 3 hours, and we were at about 4MPH pace. Climbed some of the tougher hills around.

Best thing of all, I had no dry spots when i pulled the saddle....

Maybe he was only reacting because of the wet back. Try again when he has dried off.

That's what one of the saddle makers said....I don't know, but as long as he's not sore and doesn't develop a sore, I'm not going to worry.

I feel like Cindy did last night:) I can't wait till tomorrow when i can ride again. He's catching on that when I ask him to trot, I don't want him breaking into the lope, just stay at a nice steady pace. he was doing it very well, even with Stormy moving away from him. I think the biggest factor in this improvement is the bit. With the old bit when I checked him down he threw his head up and speeded up. It was just too much bit. And even with this bit it just takes a little seesaw and he rates down.

I had an encounter with a squirrel when I was at the park this morning. I was studying for a couple of finals that I am having tonight and I had the door open. First I heard something tap on the windshield and it was a squirrel. He had climbed onto the front of my car and was looking at me through the windshield. That was the first time that has ever happened. He got to my open door and tried to look inside. I raised my foot at him and he scrambled back down onto the ground. A few minutes later he was at the door looking into my car. I was afraid he was going to crawl inside. He bugged me the whole time I was there LOL. I never had a squirrel be that brave before.

I've been in parks where squirrels would come right up to you. I think people feed them things and they think everyone will. I'll bet your squirrel had been fed by someone out of a car:)
