This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
I think Tuffydoodle lives near Houston, maybe she can put you onto some good QH dealers in that area. She got a deal on a REALLY nice little black & white paint filly not too long ago, from some big ranch herd reduction sale or something.
Well, vet's been and gone...
As for Bay, he was very nearly completely sound. After watching the video from yesterday and knowing what to look for there might have been a slight little bit of a limp on occassion, but nothing anyone would ever notice, even after a LOT of lunging. Bay was his old self, and was floating along above the ground, after the big dose of Isoxuprine and two Bute the night before.
~sigh~ so, the end result is he didn't really see any need to do x-rays, he thought the results spoke for themselves as to what the plan should be: Double his daily dose of Isoxuprine to 20 morning and night both, and if I want insurance, Bute him before rides. Vet said "He's moving just great... he's moving better than our Navicular horse."
I sigh not because this isn't good news, it is! I loved seeing him fly around feeling great. I sigh because without x-rays we're still just treating some kind of heel pain and he's never really had a sure diagnosis. I'm OK with it, and I 'get' why and what we're doing, but when I tell other people, they don't get it.
Beyond that, we got both mares really drunk and floated their teeth. Cyn's only 8 and she had sharp points and hooks and sores in her mouth. That old guy of Celias would probably feel so much better if she would do him.
With both mares barely able to walk, I have them closed in the paddock, and I walked Bay through and put him all the way into the pasture. I didn't think it was safe for them to have him in with them yet... they're just standing out there with their heads on the ground.
Well, Bay didn't like being out there alone one bit, and has been running, and bucking, and hollering, and acting up for 30 minutes now while the vet packed up his things. He looked at Bay out there flying above the ground and said "Yeah, I think you can trail ride that horse".
Also as follow up, he took some pictures of our pony with him, he knows a 20 year old pony trainer he's going to see who runs a pony club barn and who might think our pony would make a good project. I said I'd free lease her certainly to someone to try out, and sell her if and when they decided she was gonna work. I'd rather free lease her forever than sell her, it's not about the money for me. I'd like to see her in use, at a good, competent home where they know how to handle her and make the most of her. Short of the right home, I want her back if they don't want her any more.
sorry hon - ping to above...
Boy howdy did I get a good deal on that paint, $625 to be exact, but I'm near DFW, a pretty good drive from Houston.
Hey Frog, since you think your horse could have a metabolic disorder, have you noticed a change in his hair? I was just brushing and pulling Tuffy's mane and I'm noticing it's frizzier than usual. You ever notice anything like this?
I'm running out the door to pick the kidlets up, I'll check back in a bit....
Maybe he just hurt himself running around. Anyway, looks like it's one of those "wait and see" things.
All in all, I know you'll still worry (as we all would) but at least you got fairly good news.
I don't remember a change in the mane on the only Cushings horse I've ever been around, only the rest of the coat.
Oh I think he was having Navicular pain. I'd been slowly reducing his Isoxuprine over the winter, thinking I might be doing him a favor to decrease the drugs in him when he wasn't in use. So while he was originally prescribed 20 2xday, he was down to getting 14 Isoxuprine once a day. That's not enough I don't think.
If he feels good, I don't mind giving it to him. or Bute, really. I'll just Bute him before rides if I want to be sure he feels good. Vet said Bute twice a week or even three times a week isn't going to hurt his stomach, particularly if I give it when his stomach is not empty.
That's great news about Bay! I know you'd like a for-sure diagnosis, but at least you've found a treatment that works for him.
That's also good news about the pony. I'd love to see what she could do with an experienced trainer because she has so much personality.
Well, that sounds good, still wish you knew for sure, but you probably do now. If you've been reducing the meds, and now he's a bit lame, kind of goes with out saying that's the problem, doesn't it??? That's pretty much what I thought you should do short of x-rays. Stop the meds and see what happens. You have now you know. Knowing is so much better then not even if what you know isn't all that good.
But Bay sounds like he feels OK, now, so you know the fix:)
Aren't drugged horses funny:)
I've been out all day with Jenny, I got another dogwood tree, and a 6pak of flowers, and wormers for the horses. We're back, and I'm thinking of napping:) It's so warm.....
Becky
Well, that sounds like good news.
Interesting prospect for the pony too... it would be nice for her to have a purpose in life.
I haven't noticed a change in Tennessee's mane. His body hair is kinda coarse right now, but I think that's just dead winter coat. I'll have to wait and see how his summer coat comes in.
From what I was reading, the Metabolic Disorder differs from Cushings in that the rough curly hair changes don't happen, just the excess fat in the abdomen, crest and base of the tail areas, along with chronic bouts of laminitis. It was also saying that even occasional sugary treats like apples and carrots might be enough to keep them insulin resistant. So it sounds like a grain-free diet, no snacks, and a grazing muzzle are what it takes to keep get the fat off and keep their feet sound. Bummer! I should go on a diet like that myself. ;o)
Course at the moment, she looks more like this :~D
They both looked like they'd recovered enough and were starting to graze around, so I went out and relieved poor worried Bay by letting him in with them.
Good choices in the pictures. It might intimidate them if you sent some of the ones with her butt up over her head. ;o)
If the guy does take her, I'd love to be a fly on the wall the first time he gets on her.
I wormed the pony while she was still drunk... She's the only one that's ever difficult about it. I'll probably do the other two tomorrow. They've been poked and prodded enough today.
I asked him about emergency kit stuff to have with me, and while he was going to sell me some tube form of Bute to have, he said in a pinch Banamine might be better... it would treat inflammation or soreness, but also a colicky horse, so it was more bang for the buck to carry in the bag. So I bought a tube that has several doses in it to carry. With my new saddle bag I'm thinking I'll carry a first aid kit with the Banamine, some gauze and vet wrap, some Neosporin or something, and he said electrolytes would also be good but didn't have any with him.
I'd buy tickets to see that! I'd hope if they did take her, they'd let me be around some. And if they were successful, I'd LOVE to go see her show. It's a gal, this pony trainer...
I mix my own electrolyte paste. I just buy the powdered stuff and mix it with just enough applesauce to make a thick paste and pour it into one of the big barrel wormer tubes. Of course I don't carry it along with me because it might get a little sticky. I only give it before a ride in the heat of the summer when they are sweating a lot.
Cool! So it's very unlikely that she'll "Cowboy" break her. I may be prejudiced, but I think women trainers are more likely to use finesse rather than brute force. Although that lady that Becky knows who killed that horse while training it didn't seem to fit into that category. So you never know I guess.
I'd love to see her shown too.
She's got a fancy barn and has a ton of money. I know that doesn't always mean good treatment either, she at least wouldn't suffer neglect, and if she gets beaten with something, it's probably something expensive, LOL.
The vet's seen her at her most difficult... She does a big Capriole every time he's ever given her a shot, so he knows what he's recommending to this lady, he just also thinks she's very cute, and there's a demand for fancy show ponies in that pony club set. There aren't a lot of good ponies around.
ROTFLMAO!!!
Becky me???? I don't remember that. I must have made it up:)
Becky
