The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

If you can watch this video, with sound, it shows Gidget with the TV commercial she LOVES [or hates, can't tell].

She comes running when it starts, and well.... you'll see :~D

LOL!!! That is SO strange! It's like she's just WAITING for that little car thing to come out and then she goes berserk. You just gotta wonder what she's thinking.

She is waiting for that car. They ran another version of an ad, with the same voice she knew, but they skipped the car part with the jingle! She went nuts waiting for it.

Well, I'm gonna go out and groom and check Bay over really well, and probably shoot some video. I'm afraid he's lame somewhere, same as the symptom I saw last week, no worse, but still there. Head bobbing at the trot.

Sigh...

Bay's lame... uncertain why but here's the video:

Baytrot4-11.wmv

Observations (mine) feel free to add your own: I think it's his right front. But his general attitude moving is also down, it could be both fronts hurt.

His feet are warmer than Cyn's. Not hot, but where hers feel cool like a piece of wood, his feel warm like they are alive. About as warm as touching him anywhere else. How warm is too warm? Is he laminitic? The grass ~just~ started growing this week. I'd have said there's still nothing out there, they have the pasture eaten down to nubbins... but those nubbins are now growing.

When he stands, he stands on his feet. He wasn't showing any sign of standing out in front of himself or anything and his attitude was good until I started him moving.

Hopefully the 2 MB video above is playable and will run smoothly enough to evaluate. I saved it down to a smaller resolution than the original which is 33 MB. I'll post that link too when it's done, for those of you with broadband.

I WILL be calling my vet out shortly but I'd appreciate all your comments as well to be as educated as I can be. History for all of you who don't know him well, he's 24, and I've been treating him two years for Navicular symptoms with Isoxuprine daily and leather pads without any bars or wedges. He was sound last year and has been pretty much off on pasture all winter. Hoping to get him back into work, light trail riding, one of these days now that spring is here but watching him move now I think he needs looked at first.

PS:

Well... while I was writing, the big version of the video finished loading... here it is:

Oh man, I'm so sorry. I hope it's nothing serious. Mack has installed windows media player, I'll have him see if he can get the video to run when he gets home.

How long has it been since these shoes were put on?

Celia and I rode, we ran into a couple of other ladies that we know and sat and visited with them for about 30 minutes so our actual ride time was probably only 2 hours. We did do one 1 mile trot. It was great. Harley kept wanting to break to a lope, but would rate back down easily, and did NO head throwing. All this makes me think I am on the right track with the bit:). He just does not need any curb chain action at all.

I didn't get any pictures of the ride, sorry, but I did take one of him tied to my trailer. Now that the tack room door is fixed, I moved the trailer over a bit so I could tie to it. I've been wanting to do this because the tree I tie too is dead, we've talked about it. I think this is going to work great. I can see him from the house. I blocked the tires good with cinder blocks.

These ladies we ran into today, I run into them about once a year in the same spot:). They both use to do CTR's but don't like some of the rules, so do endurance. Anyway, they were asking me about Harley, the last time I ran into them I was on Rusty. They thought the spots on his rump were odd, and asked if he had any app in him:). I get that alot.

When you do go to download the video, choose to download it to your machine instead of trying to stream it... it would run smoother that way on dialup.

Bay was shod 6 weeks ago, he's due in another 2 weeks.

I left a message for my vet, no call back yet, but he's probably out on calls and I didn't call the emergency number (his cell)

So glad you had a good ride and the bit is a good fit. Sounds like he's doing great, and the saddle too?

I think it's his front right. If you don't think it's something simple, like thrush, he needs a lameness evaluation. Your shoer can put the hoof testers on him, that's a cheap way to start. Has he ever had an abscess?

He's never been thrushy before, and I can't really tell or see under there with the pads on. Think I should try to get my shoer out here or the vet?

Oh, well if he's had those shoes on that long then that's not the problem:\ Keep us informed, I'll pray for the best outcome.

Is all I can say about the saddle is it is NOT makeing him sore anywhere....so, I'm in a wait and see phase to see if he gets a sore like my old one did.

FWIW, one of the ladies we ran into said she had the same problem with her horse, getting a saddle that fit. She landed up having one custom made, paid $4000 for it, and still has dry spots, but no soreness....She's been riding in it now for 7 years....

Since he is here visiting, I took a few pictures of Celia's horse Stormy, he's 17. She's working to get him in shape for the CTR I'm shooting for too. He competed for years then she retired him while she got another one going, for about 4-5 years. now she wants to compete on him again. I was happy to hear her say she was not going to go Open class on him...

Harley wanted his picture taken.

And a picture of my iris, because they're so pretty:)

I just wish I knew what to do with him right now.

I've closed them out of the pasture, but he still has access to the back forty. There isn't a lot of grass anywhere, but I don't know whether he's getting too much anyway.

If he might be laminitic, what should I do? I'd like to give him some Bute and maybe hose his feet again, but should I not do that until the vet sees him?

Should I limit his movement or let him walk around with the mares?

Ugh.

As for her horse, Is he quarter horse? He looks a little old in those pictures, but most important, a lot too lean. Look at the difference in the amount of meat Harley's wearing compared to the neck and hindquarter of the old guy. Is she feeding him UP?

I don't really know much (if anything) about laminitis. But, from what you're saying you "think" it's only one foot, I've always thought they get that in 2 or 4. I've also been told that if you have a laminitis problem soaking them in cool water helps. Would he stand with his foot in a bucket of water?

I have no idea if movement is good or bad.

I have to run to town. Will check back later. I hope the vets called by then.

If he was really foundering, I know he shouldn't move.

I'm not ~really~ convinced he would be. There's not that much grass out there.

That's not laminitis, I can tell you that for sure. Unless he's standing still most of the time, not wanting to move, and standing with his front legs parked out way in front of him, it's not laminitis. Do you know how to feel his digital pulse?

I'd probably call the vet first. I'd bet the farm that it's just age related problems kicking in, though. How does he move going the other direction? Is he more lame?

Don't give him any bute until the vet can see him. (I've made that mistake before. Vet comes out, horse not limping, vet thinks you're an idiot.)

Gosh Hair, sorry about Bay. He looks off on the left to me. Maybe it's because he is moving to the left, that I think so. The head bob comes down when he puts weight on that left. If it is foot, I would call the farrier. You would never guess he is as old as that. He looks great! Check to see if there is any soreness in the shoulders by pinching them.

He's not reluctant to move, he's walking around. He's not playing and farting around with the mares, but he's not just standing, and he's not all parked out like a foundered horse. I just wondered what it meant that both front feet felt warmer than Cyn's do.

I didn't lunge him more than what's in the video. I reversed him only briefly to see but found him to be about the same. Once I could see clearly he was limping I didn't want to do any more.
