Guess neanderthals may not have been too good at surviving after all.

It seems either we out-competed them extremely fast, killed them, or completely absorbed them into our cultures in only 5000 years.

I predict that the muslims will be able to take over europe much more quickly than 5000 years.

What a sad regression...

Modern humans took over Europe in just 5,000 years.

Retrobate humans appear likely to take over Europe in far less time.

5000 years is a looong time. Europeans completely settled North America between 1600 and 1900 and did most of it on foot. I suspect the real time it took H. sap to occupy Europe was in the hundreds, not thousands, of years.

"Previous estimates suggested that at least 7,000 years elapsed between H. sapiens arriving in eastern Europe more than 40,000 years ago, and the disappearance of the last known Neanderthals (H. neanderthalensis) from western France. But newly calculated dates shrink the overlap to 5,000 years."
I don't know how to break the news to them...but the Neanderthals are alive and well in western France. (Note tagline.)

The Neandertal Enigma
by James Shreeve
Frayer's own reading of the record reveals a number of overlooked traits that clearly and specifically link the Neandertals to the Cro-Magnons. One such trait is the shape of the opening of the nerve canal in the lower jaw, a spot where dentists often give a pain-blocking injection. In many Neandertal, the upper portion of the opening is covered by a broad bony ridge, a curious feature also carried by a significant number of Cro-Magnons. But none of the alleged 'ancestors of us all' fossils from Africa have it, and it is extremely rare in modern people outside Europe." [pp 126-127]
