Mardi Gras is bothering me (vanity)
vanity | 2/18/06 | Lokibob

Am I the only person bothered by the Mardi Gras? The rest of the country is spending billions of $$$ on Katrina recovery, and New Orleans is partying.

Fox news said this afternoon that overtime for the NOPD will run 2.5 million $$ alone.

I mean things are tough, it is tax time, and we have to cough up hard earned money, while NO acts like a buck sponge.

I just feel that they could have waited for at least a year.

I could be wrong, tho, I was wrong once before, a long time ago.

On the other hand....maybe it will be good for their economy and I will have that much less tax dollars to fork over.
Probably not.

Maybe the second liners will finish off the City?

What do you expect from the Big Easy?

They market themselves as the City of Irresponsibility nearly as much as Las Vegas does.

I didn't wanna bailout NO when things got wet, AND I don't wanna bailout LV when things get dry.

Perhaps New Orleans doesn't know how to do anything but party.

They are already letting the state of LA handle the federal money and reconstruction. I'm furious. If I pay fed tax dollars, I want the feds to have control and monitor that. The last time we let NO and LA handle the fed monies for the levees..look what happened.

If they bring in more dinero than is spent, then it would be a sound idea if that profit is put to good use.

Of course, those are two "ifs."

I can see why they'd want to have a semblance of normalcy, and hope they made the right call, but with Nagin...chances are if it pans out to be a positive cash flow it will be dumb luck.

Morale thing. Mardi Gras brings money into the city, too, which we kinda need. It's actually a moneymaker.

Oh well there’s Nagin on my left and there’s Landrieu on my right
And Broussard is the crybaby that I’ll be with tonight
And when he whines about which parish I love the best
I tear open my shirt and I got Jefferson on my breast
’cause I’m the squanderer yeah the squanderer
I beg around around around around around…

it's not unlike an Irish Wake .... after great sadness, folks have a need to celebrate, party, and generally escape their reality. Mardi Gras is paid for by the participants, not the city, state or any other tax source.

The Krewe members I heard in interviews, who'd lost everything material, seemed to be celebrating being alive. I find nothing wrong with that. I haven't lost my home, ilvelihood, or seen my friends scattered far and wide, so I'm sure not gonna judge negatively what they do.

How does the rest of the country get screwed? Are we forcing people to come down here and drink at gunpoint?

From Riverviewmobile.com

Each year, thousands of people gather in the streets of Mobile, Alabama – home of the first known Mardi Gras celebration in 1703 – to participate in this magnificent carnival, delighting young and old alike.

A little Mardi Gras history for AWGAS.

Billions of $$$ going to NO.

I guess we arn't being screwed, we open our pockets relutantly, but do it for our fellow citizens.

But truthfully, don't you see how this appears to be wrong to the rest of us?
